#Renderer/VTR Control/VTR

Does the VTR Setup allow the use of BOTH Heads and Tails for frame repeat?
Just before I left for the day I started a rendering (fields) out to the
VTR and I set the # of frames to 120. I hilighted both Heads and Tails and
started the rendering. I noticed that the first frame that went down to
tape, did not use the 120 frames, it was one frame. I can simply return to
the heads of the tape and edit in the first frame, and the same for the
tails to correct. But I would like it to happen via the software. What
could be happening?
Regards Steve
Steve Are you using the Vtrdiaq.exp 8-20-91 driver? 3DS.set "VTR – Device =
Vtpadi" Roger D.
Roger, My 3ds.set file is: <VTR-DEVICE = DIAQUEST> I have not touch this
this was the default setting.

Steve, there's a minor heads/tails bug in 2.0 when rendering in field
mode… the heads don't get laid down. This is fixed in the update "patch"
2.01 release that'll be happening this fall. We'll keep you posted here.

Thanks for the update! It does however lay down the tails when both are
turned on. When examining a recent rendering to tape via fields, I noticed
a flash frame of colors bars, ( I always preblack with color bars ) I
thought the vtr skipped a frame, bad time code, however when I rerender
again after the third frame the Targa card grabbed a frame of the video
that is at the video in of the Targa card which happens to be color bars. I
was not rotoscoping, just doing a rendering out to the Targa card via
Diaquest to the vtr. The keyframer said it was rendering but no 3ds scene
just color bars. Any explanation of this incident?

Steve,
Sorry, it wasn't just the driver. But using the DQ ADI driver does fix a
couple other small quirks I've run into.
Roger D.
Roger, I missed your orignal intent of your message. Right now I am having
prolbems rendering to fields, I get missed frames, or the frame buffer
keeps grabing a frame of the video in at the Targa in. I will rerender
using frames only and see if the prolbem is just in field rendering. What
has your experience been.

Gary When I came in this morning I noticed that my rendering had color
bars in a couple of spots, also the frame buffer is not clearing even
though I have it set to clear in the 3ds.set. When I left the rendering
last nite it was clearing and this morning it is not. Could this be a
prolbem with field rendering?
Regards Steve
Gary, I am re-rendering again, this time without Heads or Tails active and
also I will use VP to do the rendering as well as use my own bat file to
clear the screen buffer. I have to try as well to re-render without using
the VP module with my bat file and not include both tails and heads in the
vtr set-up as well. This would determine if the Heads & Tails settings are
affecting the clear screen buffer in the 3ds.set file. Just an addition I
noticed that now my rendering (just started) using the VP module with the
clear frame buffer is giving me a TOTAL time of 4:00 minutes of last field
rendered, rather than the 2:00 minutes before I used the VP module and bat
file. I will test this again w/o VP and w/o heads & tails. Will let you now
of the results !
Regards Steve
Steve, when VP says "time for last field rendered" it really means the time
for the last FRAME rendered (in 2.0).

Gary, Thanks.
Any suggestions why I am still getting missing frames from the VTR? when
using fields. I will try using just frames tonight.
Why doesn't the frame buffer clear when I have it set to clear in my
3ds.set file?
My current 3ds.set file for < VTR-DEVICE = DIAQUEST >
Regards Steve
I don't know why you're getting missing frames with your VTR setup. We
render in fields 100% of the time and don't have that problem. What kind
of VTR are you using?
Likewise, as long as you have CLEAR-BUFFER set to yes, I don't know why
it's not clearing. What kind of frame buffer and ADI driver are you using?
– G
Gary, Frame buffer Targa+64, VTR Sony BVW-40, ADI Driver DIAQUEST. Believe
prolbem may be using 32bit tga for backgrd.
Regards Steve
Gary, I noticed that the frame buffer only clears during each rendering
when I do not have a background <none> . It will not clear when a solid
color, gradient, or bitmap file is active.
Regards Steve
Correct, Steve. When we implemented the clear-buffer code in 2.0, we
forgot to make it work when other background methods were being used.
That's been resolved in 2.01.

Gary, the ADI driver I am using in my Autoexec.Bat file is: SET
RDPADI=C:\3DS2\DRIVERS\RDPTPLUS.EXP The Frame Buffer I am using is a
Targa+64.
Regards Steve
Gary, I finally got the rendering working, I did two things;
1. Inserted these lines into my autoexec.bat file
<tmode 11>
<targedit rgb 0 genlock 1>
2. Changed the TGA file for the backgrd from a 32 bit to a 24 bit file.
Also the clear frame buffer does not clear on each rendering, only on the
start of the first frame of the animation.
Regards
Steve
I'm glad to hear that the new targa set statements solved that for you.
– G
Gary, thanks for the message regarding the clear-buffer, I thought
something was all messed regarding my Targa+.
