Don't get the wrong idea, John. If you use the Python three days in a
row you probably won't have to call them each day. But I used the
IPAS weeks apart and in the interim I had done a chkdsk /f and a hard
drive defrag. This seems to destroy the IPAS copy unlock and needs
to be updated with a new password from them. They were supposed to
drop this foolishness with unlocking it but so far they still have me
on a leash with python and page flip. I can tell you one thing, my
Schreiber IPAS routines have been deactivated for over a month now
and I won't call them until I need to use them again. The only reason
I bought the things in the first place is it gave me two of the three
reasons I needed not to resort to TOPAS to do a client project. Even
with the Schreiber harrassment it's still the lessor of two evils.
What are ya using to de-frag your disk, Don?
I do it at least once a week here (using Norton's Speed Disk) and have *never*
lost a key/code…

According to Schreiber's own tech support the use of Defrag will
sometimes cause loss of the unlocking codes on some systems. Mine
happens to be one of them. I also use Nortom Speed Disk. I also
have the DPSPAR >896 frame backup problem and not everybody has it
either.

Sheesh — I'm glad this thing has never bit me, I woulda' been in a heap o'
trouble!
I hope that you find Schreiber is unlocking all your favorite stuff.

Schreiber is always quite pleasant and never gives me any problem. They
understand the limitations to their lock scheme. Gary said they had removed
the scheme but wanted to check to be sure. I hope he is right.

Good, I was wondering why Schrieber was making one call every time.. I guess
the hard disk lock is the standard lock they use.. that makes more sense.
I have a project coming up tomorrow that will probably need something like
Python to make it simpler. We'll see. Thanks again.

Just as a note regarding these password problems. Schreiber is
shipping all new IPAS routines without protection to registered
users. Some existing products will be shipped in early 1995 in
unprotected form automatically to registered users. All routines as
they are updated will also be released in unprotected format to
registered users. Regardless clients will be automatically informed.
All existing Schreiber products that do not have unlocked versions
out yet are subject to our 24 hour password service. This can be
accessed by calling us during and after business hours at (800)
252-1024. Simply tell them that you need a password and someone will
be paged. We have taken calls at all hours and from around the world
we also posted this notice a while back when this came up.

Thanks for the info, the 800 #, and unlocking things. I am pleased that
Schrieber is doing these changes. I hope you all benefit from the changes.

Thanks for the information. Too bad I had to find out about the 800 number and
the 24 hour password service by following threads here. I am a registered
owner of your products and was never notified. At any rate, thanks for keeping
a watchful eye on the forum and your response to John Jordan.
