still trying to find a way to get 256 color renderings from acad12 to animator (not pro). I would like to get close to the quality of the animator sample file : portrait.gif the rnd/gif files i create from my shaded images convert to the typical jaggy resolution of animator when adjusted with flimaker or converter. there must be some way to generate a gif file, that can be directly viewed by animator, with a resolution comparable to portrait.gif can anyone help with this one?

Tsuneo, I am by no means an animator professional, but I do know a bit about AutoCAD. The problem you are having is probably one of resolution. AutoCAD is resolution independent (meaning that it will run and shade anywhere within the limits of your graphics card and driver…..If you have the capability of running 256 colors at 1600×1280 resolution, AutoCAD will allow you to do it.) Animator, on the other hand is very limited in the resolution it will support. (I think it's 320×200 at 256 colors). If you must have the higher resolutions, the only way to get them is by upgrading to Animator Pro or 3D Studio. As I recall, there are a few tricks that you can use to smooth out the jaggies in Animator. But unfortunately, I never learned them.

I understand that animator pro is required to manipulate higher resolution images but I just want to bring in a gif file with the same resolution as the sample (portrait.gif) that is included with animator and can be view with animator (not pro). do you know of any animator experts? thank you for your help

I know Animator pretty well, but I don't know AutoCAD very well. The problem is that your AutoCAD screen is 640×480, while Animator only accepts 320×200. While the digitized Portrait.gif looks pretty good at 320×200, you'll find that a 320×200 version of your AutoCAD screen (with all of its thin lines) is going to look pretty terrible. However, if you can output an AutoCAD drawing in .gif format at 320×200 resolution, you can certainly load it into Animator. Again, you'll need an AutoCAD person to tell you how to get a 320×200 .gif file out of AutoCAD. (Any AutoCAD experts out there?) – Jack

Tsuneo, The max resolution that Animator will support is 320x200x256. So that is the max resolution that you can bring in. This is going to give you a bad case of the jaggies on lines that are near (but not on) the horizontal or vertical. The effect on curves is not so noticeable. You can also minimize this effect by using smoothing routines and anti-ailising (blending), but you will still have only 320×200 resolution. I read back over your messages, and it seems as though you are able to import the images into Animator. It's just that they don't seem to have the acceptable resolution that Portrait.GIF has. Well!!! If it's in Animator, that's the resolution. The rest is work and effects. Maybe we can get Gary, Jack or Jamie into this. When I initially tried using the SHADE command to create images for AA, I got the same jaggy results. But when I used the ACAD12 RENDER command, I got *much* better results. Are you using the RENDER feature of ACAD12? The AA converted GIF files derived from ACAD12 SHADE GIF and ACAD12 RENDER GIF files are as different as chalk from cheese. I'd be happy to send you samples of both files. KeithF

I have been using render. I would be interested in seeing your gif files but i am not familiar with transfering files on compuserve. Is it a simple matter? thanks for your interest and help
