#Preview Problems

I just received 3DS on Saturday and can't seem to get it to preview
animations. I'm using the VVESA driver that is bundled with it and I can
render at 800×600 but every time I try to preview a flic (either make or
view) there is a horrible crash and my system reboots. I've tried using the
3ds.set as it came out of the box but that does'nt help. I've looked in
the documentation but might have overlooked it as I've been going nonstop
except for food and sleep since the program arrived <g>. Its one thing to
lurk in the background and read all the great things about 3DS but totally
another to sit down with this amazing piece of software. The comments do
not do it justice! If you could help me through this one little item I
will think I've died and gone to Software heaven. I know its been said
many times but once more can't hurt. … Super piece of software!!!

Adrian: Yes, it is a great program! In order to help you, a little more
information is required. What hardware are you running? Especially
graphics card info. What about Rendering a flic? Or just Preview crashes?
Can you View an already rendered flic? Welcome to software heaven! And
maybe some of the angels already there can help pull you up the last few
inches!!!! Greg

configuration before we can try to help.
And hey… if you think 3DS is amazing, just wait till you see the bizarro
stuff that's about to come in the back door… Have you sent your ipas
card in?

I'm using an ATI VGA Wonder card with 1 Mb and their VESA Super VGA BIOS
Extension 1.2 (VS911022) Implementation 2.01. I can render a flic and view
it in AAPRO but if I try to view it with Render/View/Flic in the KF the
screen goes blank and locks up. If I try and preview a flic the program
crashes and displays Abnormal termination.

It sounds like the Vesa driver you're using is not the most-current one.
There's a zip file with the most-current vesa drivers up here as VESA.ZIP
in one of the libraries. Plus, I'm sure one of the other ATI VGA Wonder
users here on the forum can point you in the right direction.

Gary, I went to download the VESA drivers here but they're older than the
one I have. I switched my ATI card with a Trident card from my other
computer and everything is working fine. What's ATI doing that everyone
else isn't? I shipped my IPAS card to you today. Looking forward to
whatever you guys are creating. Thanks for your trouble.

I don't know what ATI's been doing, but I've heard of more problems with
their hardware than with anyone else's. However, it seems that I remember
someone saying that there _is_ a driver around somewhere that works. I'm
sure that if we keep this thread going long enough, someone with an ATI
card will drop by.

I've got an ATI graphice ultra, and have been experiencing the same
Abnormal Program Termination Error, but I get it when I try and make a
preview of the animation. But, I have found a driver that has solved all of
my problems DL-Xpress from Vibrant Graphics. It is a very nice driver and
also works with Acad 10,11,12, Autoshade, Renderman, and Release 1.0 and
2.0 of 3DS. You may want to try it, I have had great luck with it so far.
Gary- Was the pricing I saw in a previous message correct? ($300/IPAS
package). I was thinking it was going to be around $50/ package (Not that
it isn't worth $300, I just have to rob a couple more banks).

Mark, the routines are $50 apiece, but they're bundled in groups of six
routines per package, which equals $300 (except Disk #2, which has 14
not-quite-as-humungous routines for $300 (or about $20 apiece)).
I'm SURE you'll find that each of the disks is a bargain. If I priced the
particle systems disk at what I thought it was _worth_, it would've cost
about $15,000.

Looking forward to IPAS routines. Sent ma' card in many moons ago when I
got my release 2. Any estimation of a shipping date or do you guys refrain
from such risky folly ?

Funny that you ask. I just got done (10 minutes ago) printing out my
entire IPAS list. 2106 names, and my laser printer almost gave up the
ghost on this one. (yes folks, I threw out that lousy dot matrix label
printer I was using this summer and got real Avery laser-printer labels 🙂
Sure, I'll risk my neck and give you some estimates on when I think
everything will fall into place.
The catalogs are SUPPOSED to come off the press this Friday, and they're
going to get labeled and stamped on Saturday and Sunday. With luck,
they'll go into the mail Monday, first class. Worst case is that it's
delayed a day or two if the press takes a little longer to dry the ink than
they're supposed to.
I'm sending the 5 manuals off to the typesetter (digitally, via 14.4 modem)
tomorrow evening. If all goes well, he'll have all of them typeset by next
Monday (they are between 35-60 pages each). With luck, the manuals will go
to the press Tuesday morning, and it should take around 10 working days
till they get shipped to the distribution folks. That puts the manuals in
inventory on Tuesday November 3rd.
Luckily, the actual SOFTWARE is all done and tested. I've actually got
ZERO open bugs at this time (yay) and I'll I've got to do is pull the
sample files together (I'm sure you'll appreciate that) and make everything
conform to the installation instructions that are in the manuals. The disk
labels and license agreements are being printed now, and I intend to get
the master disks to production by October 28th (about a week before the
manuals get into inventory). That means that, with any luck, we'll be able
to ship the first orders by Wednesday, November 4th.
As you can tell, the whole thing has get me so wrapped up that I'm
beginning to go a little crazy. I can't tell you how relieved I'm going to
be when this is done and I can breath a little. I actually haven't had a
day off since August 6th, and I've been pulling about 18-hours a day since.
(but hey, I got myself into this)
So, give me a shout and let me know when you get your catalog next week,

Unfortunately, the labels are now at the press, so your brochure is going
to the 20904 address. For the future, however, I can change it if it needs
to be changed.

That's interesting … we do have a PO Box of 20914 … maybe that's what
you've got. If so, that's a fine mailing address, but not shipping address.
The Post office's ZIP is 20904 so I think the catalog will still get there.

Thanks for your detailed reply! I'm sure all of us that have read your
release information can appreciate the work it takes to get software out to
the market place. It does make me wonder though if there is some karmic
correlation between releasing IPAS and election day. If we all sit home
waiting for the mail person on November 4 and we don't vote will it swing
the election either way?

that anyone will actually get product till the 5th or 6th.

You can sit around Wednesday, Nov. 4 all you want, waiting for the
mail, although Gary indicates it won't likely get there. Either way, I
hope you remember to go the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 3. And we wonder why so
few registered voters don't vote.
