Upgrade 500 help – HD

I need some help in upgrading my A500. My current system is WB1.2, 1084S
monitor, 2 Meg, one internal, and one in an Supra Ram 500RX. I want to
install a hard drive, and gain Pal compatibility. As I (well actually my
wife) :^) is due in just 17 days, I will not be able to do this unless I do
it NOW. I don't need to lose the ram I have and yet want to make the most
of what I can get. About 120 Meg would be nice… 1. What is best in
price/meg 2. SCSI or IDE ..what about speed? 3. Internal or External..
Heat, Power draw, Supra 50RX loss? 4. Known problems with support or
product.
any inputs will be greatly appreciated, no comment too small or too large!

Ken,
I think your best choice is a Supra 500XP Ram/HD… You won't lose the
500RX, and you'll have a great HD (I have one here 85Mb/3M RAM). Generally
SCSI is a better choice, due to it's conectability, and the 500XP has a
rear SCSI port where you can connect 8 SCSI units.
I would also highly recommend that you upgrade to Workbench 2.0. The list
of improvements would be too large to list here.

Thanks for the input. 2.0x is a definite upgrade, I have heard too much
about it. What about compatibility problems though. I have many games,
and productivity software that were purchased long before 2.0x. I would
hate to lose all of that. Guess maybe I had better go with a switcher,
right?

Since I've gone to 2.0(4), I haven't had too many hard-drive installable
games that wouldn't work. I think some of the earlier SSI AD&D games get
upset under 2.04. But C= ruptured itself bending over backwards trying to
get 2.0 as compatible as possible with 1.x software….

Ken – I have been using a GVP HD500 for over a year. The unit has worked
flawlessly. The price is competitive and seems to me to be a good value.
You won't lose any RAM, and you can install up to 8 meg internally. It
comes with a SCSI interface and will support up to 8 devices. You also
should consider upgrading to Amiga DOS 2.x. It really makes nice
difference, especially with a hard drive.
