#Transfer to CD-ROM

I am currently attempting to find a service that will transfer MS-DOS files
to a CD-ROM Disk. Does anyone know of such a service? I found one in Los
Angeles, but they won't have their equipment for about 6 months.
Is geography a factor? That is, do you want to be able to work with the
vendor, or just send a collection of data to be transferred? And do you
want just one or a few copies, or do you want to reproduce dozens or
hundreds or thousands of discs?
Fill me in a little, and I'll be happy to try to recommend a service that
will meet your needs.

I'd be interested in knowing where a local shop would be that could
transfer MS-DOS files to CD-ROM. I'm in NJ. How much does it usually cost
to put information on CD-ROM? Is it reasonable to have only one CD made?

Some places have a "proof of concept" which takes several floppies (usually
10 @ 1.44meg) and creates a CD-ROM for you. I've seen prices around $250.
I am in the process of collecting addresses of one-off service bureaus. I
don't yet know of one in NJ, but not too far away is One-Off CD Shop Inc.
in MD in the DC area, (call 800/387-1633 for specifics), and Nimbus in
Charlotteville VA (call 800/782-0778). Also note the other message in this
thread from 3M.

with discounts for multiple copies. There is a break-even, obviously, as
you increase the number of copies, for moving to the traditional mastering
process. I have heard numbers in the 10-20 copy range as the break-even.
It all depends on what you want to do with the copies. If you want an
archival copy, or a prototype for a larger run, one-off is a God-send.
Commercial runs, however, always favor mastering for simple cost
effectiveness.

hard disks, or hard drives, and can create ISO 9660(XA), CD-audio, photo-CD
and CD-I disks. Their base price is $299 in Canadian dollars — about $240
US at the current exchange rate.

Do you want to do anything WITH the MS-DOS files that might require their
being indexed rather than put on CD-ROM in native MS DOS form?
Yes, I am assuming you mean you want a "one-off" disc made. I am a
Data Prep. Specialist at 3M Co.'s Compact Disc Dept. and we have
several "one-off" systems to do just that. You can purchase just
one disc or go into full production, it's up to you.
