Hdbackup: Does anyone use it??
Trying to use Hdbackup in the Workbench 2.04 tools drawer; When I
follow all the example instructions in the users manual, the initial
commands, like for checking the number of disks required, seem to work
OK, but when I get down to "Start" (click on the start gadget), the
system locks up. The book says I am supposed to get a window which
warns that I will erase dF0: … That window never appears, "quit" in
the first menu then wont work, and I have to reboot to get anywhere.
I use BRU for backing up from the shell window and everything works
just as described in the manual. It appears to me that the Hdbackup
icon is supposed to act as a shell for the BRU commands, so somehow the
icon is failing to communicate with BRU. But on the other hand, it does
get through to BRU for the estimating of disks required. I inserted
"Assign" commands for both BRU and Hdbackup, but they had no effect. I
also tried putting "backup=dH0" and "start=on" tools in the icon–no
effect. The only thing "nonstock" that I have is that Crossdos is
installed so that two more floppies; "PC0:" and "PC1" appear along with
the "dF0" and "dF1".
How can you even work on a problem like this lockup? Is there a
debugging procedure for capturing the commands and error messages that
pass between the icon and BRU?

Make sure "DF0" is indicated as a device in the pull-down menu. If it
isn't, that may be your problem. As to the functionality of HD Backup, many
here will attest to its unreliablity. The program does work, but you may be
hesitant to trust important files to it. Here's some tips to help you along
the way, DO NOT PRACTICE with important files:
-Make sure first that your partitions appear as named after you have
selected BACKUP from the pull down menu. If after you have formatted the HD
you rename the partition something else, the old name will appear. You may
have to change the name in the mountlist or add an assign command to the
user-startup. CHOOSE THE PARTITION THAT YOU WANT TO BACK UP, OR THE ONE
THAT HAS THE FILES. -Make sure "DF0:" is the device selected to receive the
backed up files. -HD BACKUP will now read the files of the selected
partition, at which time you should use the "Include" and "Exclude" gadgets
to single out what you want to backup. Whe this is done, click on start.
Make sure there's a floppy in DF0 to receive your backed up files. -HD
BACKUP will generate a log and save it to a drawer called "Work". If the
directory doesn't exist, you'll get an error message. Create the drawer in
advance or save the log elsewhere. Hope this helps…

This won't be too useful but…. I use HDBackUp all the time.
Unfortunately, I use only a tape drive. While I am aware that some people
have reported that BRU is "unreliable", that is definately not my
experience.
I doubt that the the tape vs df0: makes much difference. I also have
Cross-DOS running.
You might want to look at the BRUTab file and see if there is anything
that doesn't look right. The manual section on BRU is pretty good.

Good question! Commodore lent me an A600HD so I could review it for my
magazine. Quarterback is on the hard drive! 🙂

One other thing to check is if you are using one of the "new and improved"
requesters that are very popular. I had a similar problem to the one you
described with a different program (everything would work as expected,
then when a requester should have popped up, BOOM!). Turned out to be a
compatibility problem between it and the PD requester library (the library
was KDFReq or something like that, specifically the bypass command that
routed system requester calls to the PD library). I never determined
which program was at fault, but I returned to standard requesters and the
problem disapeared.

I tried using HDBackup, and gave it up as a total loss. BRU seems to
work fine, but HDB has some real bugs in it. The version of HDB that I
have is the one shipped with AmigaOS 2.04. I don't know if a newer
version exists or not. I hope a fixed version will be released with the
new releases of the OS. (Anybody with 2.1 or 3.0 care to comment?)
