I am having a strange problem with my Amiga 500. It stops dispaying
workbech sign and if hard drive is connected it will not boot up. The
power light on Amiga is very dim at that time then suddenly light becomes
brighter (Normal) and every thing works fine.
When It happened last I took it to a repair shop and they said it worked
fine there and they also tested the power supply and it was ok. I did not
have any problem for 6 – 8 weeks. Now tonight it happened again and
corrected itself. Any ideas please.

Gopal,
I noticed that you didn't receive any replies to your question about the
hardware problems that you're having with your A500. I suspect that's
nobody feels competent to speculate on what might be wrong. You might have
to wait until it becomes a bit more repeatable to have a definite solution.
Here's a couple of things to check, though. Make certain that the power
supply connector and the expansion bay connector are properly seating. If
you have another power supply available to try, run it for a while and see
if the problems disappear. How much memory do you have in total, and what
type of HD unit (& hard drive) are you running? The A500 power supply
can't handle much extra equipment. You may be running at a marginal point
that usually works, but sometimes won't.

Thanks for reply. I have Amiga 500 with 0.5 meg extra ram with clock
in trap door underneath. I also have:-
52meg GVP Hard drive Impact Series II A500-HD+ with 4 meg simms.
Phoenix rom switcher for 1.3 and 2.04 rom. It is switch operated.
Cumana CAX 354 3.5 inch external drive.
Pace Ultralink 32+ (V32bis) modem.
Brother HR-15XL daisey wheel printer.
Epson RX-80FT+ dot matrix printer.
My problem is when I switch on Amiga power light comes on in low intensity
for a second and then brightens up and every things works fine. Recently
when I switch on Amiga power light stays in low intensity some times only
and if this happens nothing works hard drive does not boot up if it is
connected or workbench logo does not come on if hard drive is not
connected. This was happening before I put ROM swithcher and it happens
with or without hard drive.
Recently while I was working on computer pointer froze up and then Amiga
reset it self. Yesterday I had another new problem when I booted Amiga TX
light on modem will come on without loading any terminal or comm program
and them no terminal and comm program will work. So I opened Amiga cleaned
it up and closed it and TX light is not coming now and comm programs are
working. I do not know what is going on. There is no local computer repair
shop who specialises in CBM products. I took it to a repair shop who said
there is nothing wrong with it and power supply is ok too. Amiga is more
than a year old so CBM warranty is finished. I have checked all the
connections and they are fine. DO I NEED A GHOSTBUSTER AND WHERE TO FIND
ONE.

Did you try reseating the socketed chips?
One other thing comes to mind. Have you tried disconnecting your printers
and modem and seeing if the problem persists. Sometimes problems can be
introduced by printers supplying their power to the computer via the
parallel interface.

Is the 52meg GVP Hard drive and Series II A500-HD+ with 4megs of ram in
its own little box? Does it have its own power supply or is it being
powered from your Amiga 500. If it's drawing power from your Amiga 500,
it sounds like the power supply is having a hard time powering all the
devices (52meg HD, external floppy and the 4megs of ram) – yes ram, it
takes a bit of electricity to power it.

Yes Lee, GVP hard drive has its own power supply. But since I cleaned
inside problem has not appeared. I keep my finger crossed.
