#JPEG to IM

Ben-
I have tried without success to load JPEG images from PhotoShop into IM.
The error message I receive is "Not a JFIF file! – Initial Read Fails" The
header on one of these files has the following information "Vjpeg…appl…
PHOTO – JPEG…JFIF…AppleMark…"
Any ideas?

Yep – that's not a proper JFIF file, and that's the problem. Apple often
sticks other irrelevant info on their files, and they've done it there.
You'd have to strip the cr*p off and turn it into a regular file for
Imagemaster's reader to pull it in.

It's easy to skip a MacBinary header. That's probably what's there. My
MacBinary support library is one of the smallest in my code library, I
think it involves about three lines of code, or 200 lines of really robust,
safe code that double-checks every item in the MacBinary header. After
skipping about 256 bytes, there's the data. The easiest way to make your
code smarter is to jump ahead past this fixed-size header, and try again,
if you know it's a format that's sometimes coming from a Mac.
John-
A tip of the cup to you and every other software writer who makes this
all easier for us working folks who just have work to do and want to get it
done with the least amount of fuss.
Carl
I believe you – however, we're not about to get into it at this point;
we're at saturation point already.

Okay Ben (laughing out of control) how do I do that? 🙂 JEEZ I know I read
this here some-place, some-time but you know it just all kinda gets lost in
the haze of learning soooo much.
Carl
Looks like you skip the first 256 bytes – or something like that. J. Foust
seems to know; maybe he'll consider something to help, he's been known to
think about IM support occasionally.

Carl,
If your source of the jpeg images doesn't know how to turn off the mac
binary header stuff, you could use a file editor (HEX) to eliminate the
first 256 bytes of the jpeg file.
Using the program HEX (in the libraries on here somewhere), you would set
the cursor to position 100, then select "Edit/Start from Cursor Position"
from the menu. Then save.

Kelly,
Thanks I'll try that when I go back to work Monday. Are you saying to
remove all the info from position 100 to 256 or just to zero it?
Carl
Carl,
HEX is a file editor program. When you move thru a file inside HEX, the
addresses displayed are in hexadecimal. Address 100 in HEX is actually
the 257th position in the file.
From what I hear on here, the Mac stuff stuck in front of the JPEG files
is 256 bytes in size. I have never seen a MAC file, and haven't played
with a Mac since back in '83! Gawd, it was slow.
HEX allows you to change the size of files, unlike the other file editor I
used to use, NewZap. HEX allows you to make room at the beginning and/or
end of a file to enlarge the file, or remove file contents at the
beginning and/or end of the file to reduce it's size.
Since the MacBinary stuff is 256 bytes long and at the beginning of the
file, you want to chop off (eliminate) the first 256 bytes of the file,
not zero them. So once you load the file into HEX, set the cursor to the
257th position, which is address 100 (in hexadecimal). Now the cursor is
set to where you want the file to start, so you go to the EDIT menu and
select START FROM CURSOR POSITION. Now you must go and select SAVE in the
PROJECT menu. That should be it!
Course, the deMacification program somebody mentioned here might be easier
grin>.
HEX should be available in AmigaTech.

Thanks a load Kelly. I do have both HEX and NewZap so I'll give your
solution a try next time I have time at the office. I sure hope it works.

Carl: There was a file I downloaded from Genie some time ago called
"DeMac" that strips the MacBinary header information from a Mac file. You
might check here on CompuServe to see if it has been uploaded. If not, let
me know and I'll upload the program for you.
John,
I'll go look for the program DeMac. If I can't find it I'll get back to
you. I really need to have access to PhotoShop JPEG images if I am to use
my Amiga at work.
Carl
How about getting PhotoShop to read a jpeg file created on an
Amiga and transfered using Crosdos? I havent had any luck so far,
PS jpeg importer wont even see the file.
Thanks
I wouldn't expect it to work – Mac files need "extra" trash attached to
them that have NOTHING to do with the contents of the file. The Mac needs
something to do this – and I don't have a clue as to what you need to do.
My experience with a Mac is limited to Photoshop and laughing at the OS.

The mac OS is kinda wimpy for us cool Amiga hacker types..
Unfortunately they are my only link to the high end color
output devices at my work (IRIS printer,LVT image recorder).
Im dying to see some of my toaster (IM enhansed) renderings
printed or imported into our Quantel PB.
Do you prefer PC's over macs? I think I do, I just wish macs
didnt Rule her in hollywood. I havent found any amiga users at
all in the graphic design or ad business here.
I definately seem like an Amiga crazy hacker dude at work and
get no respect… but I know I got the best of both worlds!!!
I guess I do get kinda finatical some times, we have to…..
Later
Do I prefer PC's over Macs? No. I prefer neither – I think the Mac is a
very obnoxious system, I don't like the OS at all. I think the PC is a
dinosaur, stuck with old software and old hardware limitations.
I might be interested in the NeXt, but I really don't know enough about
them to be certain.
Of the Mac, PC and Amiga machines, the Amiga is the only one with the
right mix of features and capabilities for me at this time.

Ben:
WOW! You're the first person I've encountered who's opinion of the
Mac/PC/NeXT/Amiga exactly mimics mine. What's that old saying about great
minds… 🙂

Could be. :^)

I've not what one would want to call a great mind (just ask Ben about some
of my dumb questions), but this evidence seems to suggest that at least
one of my opinions is quite good enough. And thank you very much.
big grin>
– Isn't a Macintosh an Apple II+ with the sh*t kicked out of it?
– Why does the term 'PC' as it's commonly applied seem like an oxymoron?
ahem

Altitude hold is on; now all's I need is coupled nav!
Don:
(Laughing out loud) – I have friend who works at a Mac shop who'll love
the Apple II+ question. He just upgraded from an Apple IIe to an Amiga
500.

Durndest thing.. as in 'funny you should mention that'. Was in a Mac
store close by recently getting a simm. While laughing and chattering
with the nice lady, I found out that 4 of the 9 people that work there
have Amigas. Not sure what that means, but I think it rates a sigh.

You need to set the "type" of the file. Download a PD Mac program called
"FixCreator Pro." It can reset the type from generic binary (the way Apple
File Exchange will set a file from a CrossDOS disk) to the proper JFIF
type.
I've seen this question too many times… maybe I'll upload a few Mac
utilities to the library to help with this.
Thanks for a repeat of the info…
I guess I'll try to find it here in the mac libs. It would be nice
to be able to find such necisary s/w available in the amiga libs.
Does this have to be done to all file types when transfering to
a mac via CrossDOS and apple file exchange?
Thanks again
I'll upload it right away.
Thanks VERY much . Now if I can just upload to a mac I'll be
happening…
John:
That would be much appreciated.
John,
I'm not sure about the CrosDos thing but PhotoShop had no problems
whatsoever with Jpegs I created on the Amiga when transferred with Amax.
