#Buying CDROM Software

Hi All –
Can anyone recommend a good place to buy CDROM software after you've
bought the player? It seems many places sell great software packages as
long as you purchase the CDROM drive from them. I'd be interested in
purchasing a package (or individual disks), after I purchase the drive.

Check out the "vndrs.txt" file in Lib #14. There are a few dozen
distributors (many with 800#'s) who have substantial CDROM product lines.
And I hope others will share with you their favorite vendors.
Increasing numbers of retail outlets are carrying CDROM too. If your local
outlets don't, ask questions, start a movement!

We also have a 16 page catalog with over 250 items of CDROM. even though
the SYSOP neglected to include our name on his precious list. Frank Leave
me email to receive a copy.
The only thing "precious" about the OPA lists I've posted, is the good they
may do someone trying to find a needle in a haystack. Assembling them
costs me a lot of personal time and the OPA no small expense. But we do
the best we can in an ever-changing universe. The fact that your firm was
unfamiliar to me and was left off the file is regrettable and I plan to
rectify that omission in the next update. But I won't suffer a lot of
sarcasm over it.

I disagree. If you hold out the list to be an authoritative source, and
refer people to it, as the Sysop it is incumbent upon you , and the OPA to
update it as frequently as possible. Considering your unfamiliarity with a
number of the distributors that we saw at CD EXPO, I wonder what percentage
of the industry is represented. We have been in the business since 1984,
Have over 285 dealers in three countries, and take it very personal when we
are slighted. As you notice,we take great pride in not just dumping ads on
the forum, but in also takeing the "PAID" time to answer questions, clear
up misinformation, and generally do as much to enhance the industry as we
can. When we are missed by those organizations that
are"quasi-representative" we feel it incumbent to say something. As to
suffering we feel that we suffer more by the slight! Frank Harris

I second that one Jan … this forum has really improved since Rich came
on-line as a sysop.

I've had good luck with a local Indianapolis outlet that also sells by
mail/telephone order. It's called The CD-ROM Source — brand-new, small,
store-front operation and CD-ROM is ALL they sell! Prices tend to be about
30%-50% below most retail shops and they've got an in-store selection of
about 100 titles. Good deals on one-version-back titles, too. (The _1990_
edition of Software Toolworks Encyclopedia for $30, for instance.) They've
got Publish It 2.0 on CD for $40 (versus $79 in most stores). Good mixture
of reference/shareware/games. And they have a small catalog/mailer that
includes disk descriptions.

Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46220. Owner's name is Mitch-something…and one
caveat: they occasionally seem to have some WEEKEND help on Saturdays who
don't know much about CD's…
