#Which CD-ROM drv for NT?

Now that I have a couple of CD-ROMs, it's time to choose a CDROM
drive. I have been told that WINNT will support SCSI-2 drives only; so I
am asking which is the best for the money. I also need to buy a
SCSI/SCSI-2 controller that will support a HP 1Gig drive, as well as the
CD-ROM drive. I am running a 486/33 with AMI BIOS, and run mostly windows
applications. Having bought the 486 motherboard, a 15" SVGA monitor, and
traded for the HP drive in the last 3 months, I am not overloaded with
cash. But I don't want to be penny wise and compatability foolish. (I also
can't do much with the MS Developer Net CD or the WIN32 preliminary CD
until I get a drive.)
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

You can go to the Windows NT forum and download the compatibility list
which lists drives. For controllers many like the Adaptec 1542B or the
UltraStor 14F. Both UltraStor and Adaptec have reps in the IBM hardware
forum too. Both of these controllers are SCSI-2.
Which CD-ROM is the best for the money? I'm sure opinions will vary, but I'm
partial to the SONY CDU-541. It's MPC compliant, SCSI-2, supports NT (and has
been approved for use with NT), contains a 64K read-ahead cache, and works
great!
I am currently using the NT Pre-Release under this drive, with the Adaptec
1740A EISA SCSI-2 controller. Nice combo!

The Hitachi CDR3750 drive is SCSI-2 and has been reported to work fine. NT
will also support the CDR1750s which is SCSI-1 audio. The key point is the
release version for audio support on non-SCSI-2 drives. Need to use the
right SCSI card – adaptec 1540 series.
