Pagestream fonts
7 messages in this thread
I am using Pagestream 2.21 and am having a problem with font addition.Up
until lately, all I had to do was throw the .afm and .pfb files
into my psfonts drawer, and then update the list in the font manager!
Now, however, I've downloaded some more fonts, put them in the drawer, and
updated the font manager, and it doesn't recognize the new fonts.
Is there a limit on fonts in this file? I've already got 122 fonts in the
drawer, but I didn't think there was a limit. Has anyone else had
this problem? Any help would be apreciated. Thanx.

Branden,
Are your newer typefaces standard Adobe type 1? If so they should work.
There is no limit to the number of 'fonts' you can add to PageStream.
However, there are several type houses who format their .AFM files in a
manner that Pagestream doesen't like and this results in the kind of
problem that you are experiencing. SoftLogik has included a program on the
distribution disks called Fixfont (I think). It works most of the time to
correct this problem. They have another program called Fixfont2 which they
use in-house. I am not sure, but that may also have been released. They
sent me a copy of the second program, which worked on some fonts that the
earlier one did not. I am not sure if I am allowed to upload it here.
Contact Soft Logik tech support. They should be able to help you. I last
spoke to Mark at SL about this problem.

Branden,
I see Rich answered your question but one I have for you is what type of
fonts are these new ones? Did you get them out of CIS in the DTP or MAC
forums? Some versions of type 1 fonts made with fontographer 3.3 (I think
that is right) don't seem to work with PPage, and maybe Pagestream has
trouble with them too. You can check by typing the outline font.PFB and
looking for the version info, or load it into a text editor like this:
. %!PS-AdobeFont-1.0: CracklingFire 001.000
. %%CreationDate: 3/5/92 7:43:44 PM
. %%VMusage: 1024 51407
. % Generated by Fontographer 3.3
This might not even be a problem for Pagestream, but it does cause
problems with PPage.

Chris:
I got the fonts in Amigauser! They are regular type 1 fonts that
always seem to have worked before.
I am really at a loss to figure out why they are not appearing in the
font manager.

Branden,
Why not try putting them in their own directory and setting the SET/SAVE
Paths in GLOBAL to find them? And also move some of the other fonts while
your at it into some sub-directories and SET/SAVE their paths again? If
this works you'll have found that there IS a limit to the number of fonts
that can be in one directory level of PSFONTS: for Pagestream. Don't forget
to update the older directory after you move things around.

Let me know what happens.
Branden,
Some PgS users have reported having troubles when they attemped to
store too many fonts in a SINGLE directory. I like to keep the number of
fonts per directory rather small and just add all the directories with the
font manager. I've had no problems and it seems to speed up the font
requestor. Below is a listing showing how I've organized my fonts.
TYPE ONE FONTS (sorted by name)

Fonts.Type1A (dir)

PageStream uses Type I's created with Fontogrpher 3.3 without any
problems… I just fired up <ahem> CracklingFire without a hitch.
