#REALLY GOOD CD-ROM ! ! !

Dear folks, Sony, as you may already know, has a "blue light" laser working. They call it the "blue beam CD-ROM laser". Since everyone already knows that blue light wave length is shorter than red, they can pack more data onto this disc. About 1.7 gigabytes. Now, if we couple that with MPEG to store TV quality video (roughly VGA – or about 256 x 384) of which Philips can get 6,220,800 images on a regular length CD-I (for purposes of this stupid dissertation, roughly equal to CD-ROM) plus 72 minutes of full audio, then we can logically expect to store (264x384x6,220,800 =611,529,528,200 bits on a normal CD-ROM), and (611,529,528,20x 2.8378378=1,735,421,596,750) of "STUFF" on a blue beam CD-ROM. THAT is a LOT of STUFF! We have also been informed by a reliable source that Mr. Frank Harris will have good supply of -199 degree Celsius liquid nitrogen on hand so you can use it. Please note that Mr. Harris's liquid nitrogen is three degrees colder than normal liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen will be available by mail under the "Blue Plate Special", with a friendly note to the postman not to hold on to the package too long. And, yes Frank, I don't have anything better to do this morning. I could cut the grass, but then it's the right time of the year for range fires (Texas, you know!), and all that work would have been in vain. So! If you're planning to buy a CD-ROM, better wait until after COMDEX (1998). Regretfully, Jan

Actually, Jan, they use liquid nitrogen a lot around here (to cool electron microscopes and MRIs). Maybe they wouldn't notice if I ran a small, insulated metal tube a couple of blocks to my home… Sandy

Sandy, You wouldn't need a whole lot. Couldn't you carry it home in your lunch pail? Jan
