VideoDirector is a great program. It is great for simple cuts editing of
your home movies and creating a database of clips for future reference. It
allows genlocking of graphics over your video clips. That is about the
extent of it's features. It is easy to use and I like the interface.
Mediaphile is capable of much more than VidDir. but for me has a pretty
steep learning curve. With it, however, you can incorporate animations
into the Edit Decision list, use Arexx scripts, control the Toaster
(though I haven't gotten to this yet) It is quite complex and requires
scripting commands to achieve most of this. Of course the price, depending
on your equipment, can be as little as approx. $200.00. I am still not in
love with it but cannot justify AmiLink CIP at $1795 yet. So I trudge on
with the scripting and manual.

My only aspiration is home video assemble edits but I do want to include the
occasional anim for titling or segues. Audio mix or overdub might be nice as
well since I have a modest Amiga controlled midi setup. I am an avid Arexx
hacker.
Does Mediaphile have any database capability? Given its Arexx hooks I could
roll my own link to Superbase but I have little enough time as it is. — Art
VideoDirector will not do animations only iff graphic overlays.
Can't help you much on Mediaphile trying to learn it myself without too
much cursing but it claims to allow control over many devices including
laserdisc players etc.
Call on Jerry Hatchet for more detailed info about Mediaphile he's been
using it a while.

I don't use MediaPhile; I think you're thinking of Tom Wheeler… I use the
TAO Editizer.

are you using it with bridge board or on a clone? It uses VLan hardware,
doesn't it?
AmiLink is getting so screwed up, I'm considreing alternatives, and since
I already have the VLan HW, something that uses it is desireable.

Assuming you're talking about the Editizer, I'm running it on a clone. It'll
run on just about any clone that has Windows 3.x. I'm not terribly familiar
with just how v-lans work, since my decks are RS-422 controlled, but do know
that the Editizer supports a quite large range of decks. I've managed to make
it through a year of their bug-squashing, but the bugs are just about taken
care of, now. It interfaces nicely with the Toaster, and allows you to pre-set
everything concerning the Toaster for each edit, and allows you to save those
EDL's, of course.
