Recently an individual told me that it was possible to use a VGA style
monitor on a 2000 series with 2.1 roms "without" a flickerfixer style
board. I purchased my new roms after Commodore's death and never did
recieve the manuals for the new OS so I cannot confirm if this is
possible. If someone would enlighten me on this I would be truly
appreciative.

The A2000 has some higher scan modes (ie- "productivity") that are the same as
VGA. You're stuck, though, trying to make the selection without a low scan
rate monitor with which to see what you're doing! If you can get some simple
monitor (or a TV with A/V switching), you can boot up while looking at the
A2000's mono output (via an RCA connector in back).
You should be able to edit your start up script to take care of the switch
automatically. This means you'll need the mono output trick only once.
Again, no. The same 15-31 Khz problem. To go up to 31 Khz (VGA) you NEED a
FlickerFixer (or FlickerFree or whatever). A3000s don't need it. It is
included. But I remember that once I was been able with an A2000 to record
straight to Hi8!!! No FF needed!

I'll have to disagree with you on this one. As I understand it, the A2000 WILL
generate the requisite 31.4kHz horizontal scan rate. I also believe that it's
a progressive (non-interlace) display.
The A3000's DO have a very nice de-interlacer built in that is perfect for
Toaster users who are locked into the 15.7kHz rate because of video.

I believe you are correct. 500's and 2000's can generate the 31kHz signal with
the ECS Denise and at least a 1 meg Agnus. This is productivity mode, 640 x
480, with a maximum of 4 colors on screen.

Nope, it's 31.5…
It's there, but it's almost unusable on unaccelerated machines due to dma
contention.
btw, 22khz mode is Super72.

The 3000s display VGA video all the time, whether the software THINKS it's
making NTSC Hi-Res or Productivity. The de-interlacer hardware doubles the
frame rate and line frequency.
So, Amigas with 2.04 ROMs CAN output VGA, but productivity only. A monitor
that works with a A3000 (de-interlacer hardware ON), can be plugged into a
VGA peecee. Right?

Yes. Some ambidextrous users (PCs and Amigas) have a monitor switch so they
can use the one VGA monitor on both machines in a time-sharing fashion.
You don't have to be ambidextrous. My switch is right next to my left foot
<grin>.

If you can use a pc monitor on Amiga then why not a 1084 on a pc??
Because PC's aren't as versatile in Video as the Amiga.
btw, you can use a 1084 with a PC, you just need some kind of VGA to Composite
video board, and the quality would basically suck, but it would work. (The VGA
to C boards cost more than a plain VGA monitor too.)

Actually, you *can* use a 1084 on a PC… just not with VGA. I've used my 1084
(when I had one) as a CGA monitor… maybe EGA, too, I forget, it was awhile
ago.
