I have purchased a NANAO F550i-W 17" monitor. It has the most gorgeous image I
have ever seen generated by a computer. I wanted to get the best!, and I
believe I did. The size and clarity will rest these tired eyes quite nicely,
thank you.
However… All is not perfect. The display from my IBM's side ATI Vantage board
is absolutely unbeatable, and when I use Productivity mode or something like
that, the Amiga display is also stupendous. I have enabled mode promotion,
which keeps things rolling along pretty good. Still, most of the Amiga's modes
are NTSC, and it's obvious that the NANAO, great as it is, doesn't know from
NTSC. Sigh! Also, even if I stay with Productivity mode, I had been sharing my
monitor between Amiga/IBM with a switchbox from Redmond Cable. Apparently, this
box is a bit too iffy for the NANAO's liking, and the signal is weak and
distorted.
Obviously, I need some suggestions. I got a new monitor because my 1950 was
having problems, and I need to at least send it off for repair. I should have
probably looked a little further before I leapt with the purchase of this
monitor, and because of the area where I live, I purchased via mail order. Not
that I really want to send this thing back. I don't think I've ever owned
anything this good. But if there were some magic adapter that enabled NTSC
signals to be read, and if there were a high-quality switchbox that allowed me
to use the bridgeboard without unplugging anything, perhaps someone here knows
of such things, or at least has some general tips for dealing with this
situation. I would appreciate anyone's comments.

Well, I know exactly how you feel. I too have a Nanao F550iw. It is a
treat indeed and 17" is fantastic for all those little HiRes Laced screens
like AutoPilot, Dopus and Imagine. No more squinting 🙂
My switch box didn't like the new monitor either, I'll let you know if I
come up with a solution.

Is the 17" rating really the actual screen size? I've seen some monitors
that say they're 17", but that's only if you include the bezel.

Indeed, monitor sizes are all relative, 16 inches is the screen diagonal
size. It is 3" bigger than a 14" which is a HUGE difference. I'm really
mad at the industry for pushing those 14 inch monitors down our throats.
It is a conspiracy. Remember how you felt when you went from floppy disks
to hard drive? The change is even more dramatic.
No one ever told me about 17". What a nasty secret.

Glad to hear you have the same monitor! I hope you don't mind, but
I've written down your name and ID with the note "has a NANAO
F550iw". You never know. By the way, my switchbox works fine! All
that hardware fussing must have resulted in a bad connection. Having
added doublex to my arsenal, the Amiga display is doing pretty well,
and I just flip the switch to Windows on a 1024×768 crystal-clear
display. Sumthin' else! Still, I hate to lose all those native Amiga
modes. If you hear of anything that will help, please let me know.

Are you running on an A2000? I have a Mag MX-17F that I am using on a GVP
EGS-110/24 but the one that I originally tried out (borrowed from a PC
friend) worked great on an A3000 with display enhancer on).

I have a 4000/040. I've heard great things about the Mag monitor, but
after reading PC Magazine's exhaustive review of 17" monitors, I just
had to have this one. Things are really going pretty well now (see
msg. 117043). Do you mean to say that a display enhancer solves the
problem with low sync rates? If so, will the AGA display enhancer
ever see the light of day?

Well, as far as I know, the A3000 display enhancer will drive the Mag type
monitor just fine but I believe that there are some modes that will not
work through the enhancer.
