I've got a bitmap that I want to pull into 3D Studio.
What I've tried to do is get the outline of the bitmap using Corel's outline
tracer.
When I bring it into 3D Studio it's got more vertices than it needs – the
vectors were created too short, so there's too many of them.
Question: What's the best way to get the least number of vertices? Is there a
way to do this in AutoCAD or 3D Studio?
Or can you suggest parameters to tweak in Corel Trace?
Or is there some better way of getting a bitmapped logo into 3D Studio?

There are a *few* ways of gettin' a vector outline of a bitmap into 3DS, Bill.
For one, you could use it (the bitmap) as a backround and do a See Backround in
the Shaper's View menu and trace it right there. If you want your file to come
into 3DS from CorelDraw in a managable form, export from CD using the .AI
option. Don't forget to weld coincident vertices before lofting. If you are
already using .AI and there are too many vertices, either clean them up in CD
before exporting or play around with CorelTrace's parameters for vertice detail
during tracing.

You exported from Corel via DXF, right? Use AI (Adobe Illustrator),
instead! Then when you import into the 3DS Shaper, select all the
vertices (you'll notice that there are the SAME number of vertices as
there were Corel nodes–nice, huh?), and weld them (apparently there
are some leetle gaps to be closed up).
There will be an IPAS to reduce the number of vertices in a pline
(2D Shaper) or mesh (3D Editor). It is called OPTIMIZE.PXP and will
be available through Mike Davis of ADCO. This routine is VERY nice,
it prompts for an error threshold… at 0% only the completely
unneeded vertices will be eliminated, but if you specify…say…5%
then those vertices that are 5% and less off a straight line (2D) or
off the plane of coincident faces (3D) will be eliminated! Real nice
for objects that were tesselated to accomodate a boolean function,
after the boolean, just OPTIMIZE and there you have your relatively
*simple* model back with the boolean function performed on it! Saves
