A-Max bombs!

I have just installed the A-Max II Plus card in my 4000/40. Previously it
resided happily in my A2500/68030. However, in the 4000 it bombs
immediately after it loads the roms into memory and the OK button is
presssed. I am using version 2.5 of the software. Any advice would be
gratefully received.

This is not what you want to hear but I'd suggest dumping AMAX and
getting an Emplant. On my 4000/040 I am effectively running a Quatra 700
through Emplant. And now as of V 3.18, with full stereo sound!

I have a similar problem. I bought a PPI Zeus '040 in the spring and
found that my Amax-II (v 2.06) no longer worked. I contacted ReadySoft a
couple of weeks ago and they confirmed that versions before 2.56 would not
work with an '040 board. They told me I had two choices for using AMAX.
First, I could upgrade my software for ~$59.00 CDN. Second, I could wait
until mid-November and order a new AMAX hardware/software combination for
~$450.00 CDN. The new hardware/software will apparently multitask the
AMAX with Amiga.
$450 for an upgrade seemed high to me, especially given the release of
an apparently stable and more flexible Emplant.

Did ReadySoft give you any particulars on their new version of AMax? Such
as color capabilities…

Supposedly it's 32-bit color if you have a 16-bit color on your
Amiga, otherwise it's according to the capability of the Amiga.
Long time no type (or see or talk…) What do you mean by 16-bit
color? AGA or a 24-bit board?
Oooohh and I see that your newsletter has expanded – nifty! Do you
have any other information, formal or just gleaned, on the AMax
upgrade? Any thoughts/feelings/intuitions on their product vs.
Emplant? Hope you're well…

Ouch…did I say 16-bit? I meant 24-bit.
CROSSINGS is slowly expanding to include more Mac coverage. It looks as if the
new A-Max will be a great product. 32-bit color, multitasking, a universal
SCSI driver, and maybe Ethernet support.
Upgrades to current A-Max owners should be shipping in a day or two; complete
products in a couple of months.
How's business? I keep hearing from people who have talked to you, but we
never seem to cross paths anymore.
If you know any Amiga beginners, tell them I'm teaching a free beginners class
for Amuse on Nov 4 at Audio Technologies, 1500 B/way (45th St) at 7 p.m.

ReadySoft made a comment about colour capability in the next AMAX
release, but I didn't pay much attention. I believe the fellow
referred to four colour capability, but he also knew that I was
running on a 2000, so it may be that AGA chipset machines would have
higher colour capability.

Yeh right. Mid November. Remember the last time that ReadySoft said
wait for the II+? It took almost a year later to come out.
Emplant is here now and it works great.
And 3.19 adds file transfer capabilities to the Emplant! Aren't we lucky?

Unfortunately I'm having problems with file transfer with 3.19. I just
get a big white box on my screen. I must reboot to get out of it. Is is
working for you?

No problems here with 3.19 file transfer. I have a 4000 with 18megs.

Did you download the full 3.19 version or just the lite version? I
grabbed the lite version and am wondering if that might be my
problem. No docs were included with the lite version by the way.

$450 for the AMAX upgrade! What will the cost be for those not
"upgrading" from an earlier version. Whew! Even the "Deluxe" version of
Emplant is only $399.95 list. A much better deal IMHO.

Yeah, since Emplant can make good use of AMAX's Mac drive diskette
support, the Emplant seems like a better 'upgrade' than AMAXII ==>
AMAXIV.

AMAX IV has been announced and is supposedly due later this fall. It's
a color upgrade from AMAX II+. Pretty much like the Emplant, but of
course limited to the one emulation. They do have a few differences,
e.g., in their ability to access Mac floppies. There's no AMAX III.
AMAX IV apparently will retail for around $500, which is more than
Emplant's price. I would imagine an upgrade would be considerably
less. It'll be an internal card, only.
Yep, My AMAX cart. & MAC drive comes out every time I have to install new
software (on LD floppies) on my MAC HD under Emplant.
