#Supra14.4 advice

Erik,
I remember you saying you recently got a Supra modem. Have any hints
on gettin' it to run correctly with AP. I just got one, but can't get it
beyond connecting and then a line of gunk/text appears and it
disconnects.
I appreciate any help you can offer.I must be missing a manual
also, not much data to help get it setup.

Hope you don't mind that I have cut in. I have a Supra 14.4 and it
works great with AP. Chech your user setup in Ap. See if initialize has
the following string " |~ATZ|?K~~ATDT " leave out quotes.

Yes, initialize string is correct. It connects to Cis but the next
line is just full of senseless characters and then AP logs off.

Do you have a correct cable with the RTS/CTS line in place? (i.e. a
hardware handshaking cable.) 14.4 doesn't like a cable without hardware
handshaking capability. Also try experimenting with the link speed. If
it is too slow with respect to the connect speed to CIS, you will loose
data.

O.K. I know this sounds dumb, but I own a supra 14.4, and I forgot to set to
7E1, if its anything else you get connect, followed by loads of junk then RE TE
and finally BYE! Hope I helped a little!

the times I've seen garbage on a clear line, there has been a mismatch
in connect speed, i.e. the modem is at one speed, CIS is at another.
Double check the speed setting in AP and check the modem display to see
what speed it thinks it is connecting at. Are they different?
If they are, that's your problem. If not, it's a mystery to me.

I'm glad it worked.
A word of warning:
ATZ will load the stored configuration in NVRAM, not the factory
defaults.
If you've somehow screwed up the info stored in either of the storage
registers, ATZ, ATZ0, or ATZ1 might result in an incorrect configuration
being loaded….

It seemed fairly easy. I used Serial prefs to set up for hardware
handshaking (RTS/CTS – make sure you use a serial cable that has all the
wires), set the link speed to 38400 in AP, and use the following setup
string:
|~AT&F2|?K~~ATDT
The 'gunk/text' you see might be problems with the MNP error correction
and compression. To disable those, use the commands 'AT\N0' & 'AT%C0' to
disable both of those features. (Back when I had a USRobotics 9600 baud
modem, it would have trouble hooking up to some Supra modems, so disabling
the high-speed modem features and running at just plain 9600 baud allowed
me to connect….)
P.S. ATZ load a stored configuration from NVRAM, and not the factory
configs…..AT&F2 enables h/w handshaking and all the MNP goodies.
Also, have you been able to log on using ATalkIII (which should have been
bundled with your modem)?

I tested the cable and all pins are wired correctly. I checked the
serial settings in Pref drawer of WB and those are correct.
I tried your string, but got the same result…..a line of guke/text
and then AP disconnects.
I tried the string that Wayne Cole posted "|~ATZ%C|?K~~ATDT", but got
the same result.
No, I did not get the bundle with ATalkIII &GPFax, just the modem and
a new serial cable. I tried the old term prgm that came with my old Amiga
modem. It communicated with the modem correctly, so I tried goin' on line,
using your string, then Wayne's string, but still get the same result.
So, if you can recommend a/t else, I'd be much o'bliged.

Hmmmm, sounds weird.
Have you tried connecting to a 2400 baud node?

No, I'll have to play with that too, but at least I know the gadget
works.
Tis' a wonderful thing watch'n stuff zoom by on the screen when I log
on now. I dnld' a coupla graphics file to check out. And am wondering if
the demo of AFax is worth look'n into.

Finally got it!! Had to access a different node. Though, I don't
understand why it would not work when I had disabled the Mnp and
Compression featurs. I did a search on Cis and found a local # that
supports V.32/V.42 and used the string both you and the AP docs recommend
and it worked first time out.

I'm using the SupraFAX 14.4 v.32bis modem which I just got and
upgraded from a Supra 2400 Plus. Mind you there is only a 2400 and
300 buad lines for CIS in my town, so I can't give you any 9600 help,
but all I did was change the link speed to 57600, and my initialize
string to "|~ATZ%C|?K~" without the " of course. Prior to running
AP, I used BackTalk (you can probably use the 'interactive' autopilot
option to do the same) to set the modem. I used AT&F2 followd by
AT&W. That was it. No problems with CIS or several other BBSs.
I got it finally! Had to use a different access node.
