I'm accustomed to our Panasonic AG7750, a relatively rugged machine
compared to the consumer lot. The Sanyo looks a bit consumer-ish but
seems to be bulletproof so far. We've been rendering almost non-stop
for about 4 days so far. It has some features I wish the AG7750 has,
such as the switcher and dual S-Video inputs. It alleges to be about
10 db better in the signal to noise department. We're feeding it with
a Targa+ 64 and it looks as good as the AG7750. Because it uses LITC
it doesn't fast-forward or rewind with the precision of a higher end
deck. For instance-as it screams along in FF it stops short of your
frame assignment and then kind of slowly steps to the frame. But it's
exact every time. I'm told that it can't read the time code in FF or
REW. In single frame recording though…it's as fast as the AG7750.
Set at 5 seconds of pre-roll (same as our AG7750) it's very precise,
no hunting. It takes no longer than the AG7750 (about 20 seconds per
frame).
The Truevision rep stopped in yesterday and I showed him the deck. He
says he's not at all suprised at the price-performance. Years ago he
apparently rep'd Sanyo and said they usually delivered a whole lot of
bang for the buck.
Only time will tell if it'll put up with heavy duty commercial abuse.
If it doesn't it still may be a worthy contender for the more casual
animator.
The BCD controller (built in) works without a glitch with 3DSr3.

Since you brought up pre-roll, how would you know when it is too
short. I would assume that if the frame and servo lock indicators are
on then you are OK? I using the AG-7750 and it seems to lock in after
about 2-3 seconds. The longer the pre-roll, the better the chance of
creating a dropout, right?
These VHS machines need 4 to 5 seconds preroll. "Too short" of a
preroll means that you can miss the edit entirely. The drop out
"theory" of keeping prerolls short is not well founded. The
manufacturer knows what the correct preroll time is. (it is not 2 or 3
seconds, in production conditions)
Thanks for replying, I'm I to assume that the frame & servo locks have
little to do with making the edit point? I'm guessing in that I have
no background in video. If one is having a problem with grabbing
images from video tape, does it help to increase the pre-roll beyond
10 seconds?
