We chose the XGA IIT – AG????? Vibrant drivers for 3DSr3 and they work fine.

All's well now, I was missing thye VESA driver.
If you use "3DS VIBCFG" to set up 3DSr3, you should see "Hercules
Graphite" as one of the options. You don't need the RCPADI driver
that came with the card.
The Graphite is an XGA clone, and will thus work with any XGA
driver for any program that supports XGA, though you get more
performance and higher supported resolutions and color depths with a
Graphite or at least IIT AGX specific driver such as the ones
provided by VIBCFG.
Because it is an XGA clone, you ***MUST*** eXclude "B100-B1FF" from
your memory manager!
I am eXcluding the A000-C7FF that Hercules recommends which would
cover the B100-B1FF range. But something is wrong; 3DS crashes
periodically – always after changing screens. Sometimes after
rendering, sometimes when switching to the material editor. Its
particularly annoying because my BIOS has no memory check bypass, so
I have to sit there tapping my fingers while it counts though 64mb
after every crash.
You might need to get a new version of the VESA TSR for the card.
Early TSRs from IIT had some major problems, but Hercules fixed most
of them.

FWIW some Micronics MBs have an undocumented memory check cancel by pressing
the space bar….

Actually, the AGX isn't exactly an XGA clone. It works like the XGA,
but initialization is an entirely different ballgame. The AGX (The
chip the Graphite is based on) is actually a VXE device. XGA drivers
will not work on the AGX, but VXE drivers will. VXE is a standard
from VESA that defines a method of querying an XGA device to find out
where it is mapped and what modes it supports, and how to access
those modes.
