There MUST be more folks out there using IDE drives with their 4000's…
Again, lets get a compatability list going….
If you are currently successfully using (or unsuccessfully trying to use)
an A4000 with an IDE hard drive, please compose a message, detailing any
problems, hints tips, etc, along with the model #/mfg name and drive
capacity, and REPLY to me here in this thread.
I'll compile the list and upload it to the library.
Your input will be most appreciated.
I've installed a couple of drives for customers…. but it's been a
while so the brands and models slip my mind. I didn't have any real
problems, other than the mechanical ones when you have to wedge 10
pounds of stuff into a 5 pound bag. I realize that's not much help,
but I wanted you to know that some people *were* installing drives.

Added 2nd IDE-HD as slave to A-4000..Master Seagate st3144AT rev 1

Drive installation easy.
Problems: 1- C= manual mentions dip switches must be changed for master
and slave, but dosen't tell you which ones to change on
master.
2- Data corruption on large files. Easily fixed by changing
the MAX TRANSFER to "=0xffff". This problem I believe is
shared by other drive configurations and M-T change might be
different.. Another well kept secret…

Eddie. the reason Commodore did not mention which jumpers to change for
the master/slave configuration is because each model of hard drive of from
every manufacturer is different. They would have to list an entry for
every hard drive on the market and of course, that list would change
almost daily.

Michael,
For all my problems, you should know that the Maxtor 7345A _does_ work
very well with the A4000… But you must have an "de-broken" (newer)
motherboard revision; So be wary of reports of trouble with certain
drives.. Ask those people when they bought their A4000s.
