Hi guys, maybe you can help me. I have an A3000 and the basic Emplant. I have a
SyQuest connected to the A3000 SCSI. I can't get the Emplant to recognize the
SyQuest. I don't have a HD floppy.
I'm not sure, but I think you need a Syquest cartridge formatted in
AMAX format for it to be recognized by Emplant. (It has to be mounted
by the AmigaDOS system for Emplant to deal with it or something.)
Now, if you have a SCSI option on the Emplant, I guess you could put
a Syquest on it and format Mac cartridges…..Though there's a report
of some problem with having to re-boot to change cartridges?!? (I
dunno, as I only have the Option A Emplant – no SCSI, yet.)

Yes Emplant's scsi is 100% MAC so Syquests you format on the MAC
side can be read on real MACs. There is no problem with Emplant's
scsi controller and Syquest Cartridge swapping on the MAC side. You
just drag the icon to the garbage can and then remove the cartridge.
It is the empscsi.device on the Amiga side that needs a little more
work.
OK, but I have my SyQuest connected to the SCSI port on my A3000. The disk is
formatted as MAC, and the Amiga won't recognize the disk.
That is right… If it is a real MAC SCSI disk, it's gotta be on the real
MAC SCSI controller (Emplant SCSI) otherwise it has to be formated as an
Emplant or Amax partition. Real MAC formatted disks must be on the
Emplant SCSI.

Jonathan…..any idea how close the Emplant team is to having the 486 emulation
ready for market?
From what I have been able to gather.. it (486 emulation) will be out by
years end….

This post has a little more info than your email request. If your
Syquest was formatted on a real mac then the MAC-HD would be the tool to
use, but again I have no experience with it since I use Emplant's own scsi
port for that purpose. One thought though. Do you have all the "stuff" you
on the MAC side that you need to read Syquests? I know I had to have
friend with alot of MAC experience install an init or something so that
the MAC would deal with Syquests properly.

Sure, but you might also want to keep an eye on the AmigaVender section
as Jim just posted on GENIE that he has a section there although he is not
yet "open for business". Soon you will not be limited to second hand
information.

You'll have to use mac_hdSetup with an amiga formated cartridge first then
switch after the amy see it, cycle through the file format choices and select
the mac one, and finally select it in the devices menu of the software (Util
Unlim can explain it better than me).

OK, I'll try to give this one a shot.
This was what I had to do to mount my Bernoulli on the Amiga side (as near as I
can Remember 8) ).
1 – You will need to load an Amiga formatted Syquest into the drive that is
connected to your A3000 SCSI port. Then boot you CPU. The main reason for
this is so the Amiga will mount the device and create a mount list for you to
work with later.
2 – Once you see the WB and your Amiga Syquest drive, you can eject the cart
and now insert the Mac cart. Now launch your Mac_HDsetup app that came with
your Emplant SW. Scroll through the items till you find an "HFS" partition.
That is the standard Macintosh Hiarchial File System (side light). You'll need
to save that out using the options provided.
I'm sorry, I'm getting a little fuzzy on the details. You should really call
UU and let them walk you through it.
Once you've saved out that file (device driver), you'll need to go in modify it
with a text editor.
3 – With the text editor, you'll see that the file will contain something like
"SCSI.device" or for those like me with the A4000/A2091 you should see
"SCSI.2nd.device". You'll need to change that to say "EMPSCSI.device". That
driver (Empscsi.device) should have been installed with your Emplant SW.
You'll need to make sure that the device name has both the " marks (eg
"empscsi.device"). You'll also need to delete the pound sysmbol at the end of
the file and all the text from the start of the file down to where it is
indented. Save this file out to the Devs drawer with a name like
Macsomethingsomething (eg. "MacQuest" 8) ).
4 – Now when you launch the Emplant sw, you'll need to go to the devices button
in the setup and look for the MacQuest partition and select it. It should now
look for the Mac HFS volume when you boot.
As you can see, this setup is complicated. I would recommend that you call UU
to verify my ramblings!
I have written this while away from the Amiga. If there is a need for more
info, let me know and I'll sit down and write down the steps as I go through
them. I am no longer using this option. I found an old external HD and now
the bernoulli is the Toaster volume as it should be and the external HD is
permanently connected to the Emplant. I realize that would not help those of
you that don't have the SCSI opition.

PS the best game on my Amiga is now MAELSTROM (a Mac game) with full stereo
sound and 256 color graphics! EMPLANT, EMPLANT (bowing) 8)
