Is there going to be a cross platform / OS renderer for 3DS. Will it be possible to have a NT server, a SGI, a MAC, a windows app, or a DEC Alpha do network rendering without the overhead of 486/DOS emulation? It would be nice to be able to render with a multi-processor machine. Maybe a four processer Onyx or a duel Pentium NT machine. It would be nice to have a windows app for a slave renderer. I've been having a few odd crashes using 3DS under windows and really don't consider it an alternative. Writing a portable renderer would allow us to have a renderer running in a multi tasking / multi processing environment with the overhead of the entire 3DS package.

C'mon Robert… you've been around long enough to know that I can't comment on any future Autodesk development plans. I bet you thought that since I was on vacation, you'd catch me off guard, eh? <g>

I think maybe it would help your nerves to take it that when someone aks "when will you do this" they really mean "please do this". Please, please do cross-platform renderers. Think about it, you could sell the 3DS package to someone then charge extra $$$ for each type of CPU they want a renderer for.

Your idea is great. It could not be that bad to run (model) 3ds under x86 emulation (althought it seems that NT only do 286 emulation) in a DEC Alpha platform. And it could not be that difficult to make a rendering (cheap:) module compiled to the platform in question. It sounds good! Of course, all could be change if Release 4 go multiplatform. aah, but that's another story 🙂 Now, if I only can find a new computer in where start to run the 3DSr3! (Compaq, launch the new Pentiums now! <g>)

Try running it under OS/2 2.1. I've been doing this for a few days and have had no 3DS related crashes (actually, the only crashes I've had have been from CorelDraw for Windows and a Windows game). I haven't figured out how to get something to keep running in graphics mode when it's in the background, but I've heard this is possible. Anyway, it helps a bunch to be able to task switch away from 3DS and to have other things running in the background besides 3DS.

Sure Robert. How many alpha renderers do you want? I'm sure that Gary will give you the exact day of the release of that renderers. C'mon, have you forget to whom you are talking? Yost, Gary Yost (003DS with license to program) <g> But of course, all of us can dream 🙂
