Recently received flier in the compuserve magazine advertising
Zoom 14,400 bps FaxModems. They are offered at a good price
(with software) plus $30 trade in on any modem. However, a
ccording to Direct Micro, the
modems they have do not operate with the Amiga and referred me
to the Zoom company. Not much luck from them. Got hung up on
twice on my dime. Their 800 # wouldn't answer. The tech support
had a pseudo person giving numbers to call.
I have a Supra Modem 2400 but the Supra people want an arm and
a leg for their 14k modem….plus: extra $$$ for the software.
Should I chuck the Amiga for a PC ? Seems like finding stuff
for the best machine around is getting pretty thin.
Anyone out there know whether a Zoom external will work for the
Amiga. ….. and if there is any software reasonable for Data
and FAX to work with it ??
I used an old (three years ago) Zoom 9624e on my Amiga with no problems.
GPFax _should_ (read, I've never tried it) work with their newer class 2
fax-modems. The folk at Direct Micro probably have no idea what an Omege
(sic) is.

The Zoom modems work fine with the Amiga. Nearly all of them use
generic Rockwell chipsets with slightly modified firmware. I have
used almost all of them at one time or another without any problems.
Thanks, Jon…How about software for Amiga/Zoom ? Also, I see you
have MAC and 486 emulation. Can you tell me more about your system
…where you got it, how much, how well it works, etc. I had one of
the original Bridgeboards for the 88 but scrapped it because it was
too slow. My wife uses a 386 clone because that's what she needs for
work. I use both but the Amiga is still my 1st through 10th choice.
Unfortunalely, I sometimes need to do pc work. I'd really like to
have it all in one hunk instead of wheeling my chair back and forth
across the room.

There are 386 and 486 bridgeboard type products and a 486 emulation for
the Emplant coming out soon. The Emplant will emulate a color MAC at full
speed.

The software won't work with the modems, and the internal models won't
work in the Amigga. But the external Zoom modems work fine…as do any other
RS232 compatible modems.

Lots of them…lib 5 is full of them. There's nothing specific about
the Zoom as far as straight telecomm is concerned that is special. A terminal
program that works with a normal RS232 modem will work fine with the Zoom.
99.9% of all the consumer external modems out there are normal RS232 modems.

I just got a Practicial Peripherals 14.4 S/R Fax Modem in Northern VA at
$181 retail; could have got a less-known brand without the lifetime
warranty at $125. The PM14400FXMT is cheerfully D/L'ing at >1700 c.p.s. on
some boards. If a modem doesn't require Windo-does and isn't Mac specific,
I'm not aware of why it wouldn't work with your Amiga. You don't need a PC
to telecommunicate.

Also, what software do you use with your PM14400fxmt ?
It's not listed in their current ads, but I'll look next time I'm over
there (at Micro Center). I use registered versions of Jack Radigan's
TERMINUS, and AUTOPILOT, which is exclusively for use on CompuServe, and
will save you a pile. They're both laying around here somewhere, waiting
for you to give them a look on a shareware basis. Oddly, I am utterly
unable to comprehend ALADDIN, an automated program for use on GENIE.
Actually, AUTOPILOT is over on the AMIGAVENDOR forum, Lib. # 9 if my
failing memory serves me.

Compuserve. Now only on 2400 baud but want to upgrade to 14k w/fax.

The $125 14.4K is a Zoom INTERNAL model. You MUST get an external one,
or be sure it really will mount and operate correctly in an Amiga.
Terminus is sort of like JRCOMM 2.0. Good luck.

just to add to what has been said, so long as the modem you are
purchasing is either external, or it is internal but designed for the
Amiga, you can't go far wrong. Also, the modem should understand the
Hayes command set of instructions, but modems that do not are somewhat
rare.
If you are looking to have FAX capabilities, make sure that the modem
can meet the Class 2 FAX standard. If it does, then you can download the
FAX software from here. It's not the greatest, but it does work.
