Hi,
I'm digitizing video images using a frame grabber then loading them into
DPaintIV AGA to modify them. The images are mostly hand drawn cartoons in
black on white. The digitizing process renders very smooth drawings with
little "jaggies." However, due to the non-uniform lighting (and video cameras
that are just too blasted light sensitive <g>) my pictures end up with a lot of
dots as artifacts. I can get rid of a lot of them by adjusting the dynamic
range, contrast, and number of colors (down to 4) with AdPro, but there are
still too many to be acceptable.
Looking at them closely, most are single pixels. I think if I could eliminate
all the single pixel dots, the remaining one's would be few enough for me to
live with. The Disney Animation Studio program has a function which cleans up
all stray pixels, however, it only works in 2 color images, and the selection
of screen modes is few.
Now here's the question: does anybody know of a program, paint program, or
technique that will delete or "clean up" all the stray (single) pixels?

Have you tried the "Remove Isolated Pixels" function of ADPro? That might
work, but you will have to play with the settings, I think.
Or, in DPaint, you may be able to lock the background color using the stencil,
and just paint with the foreground colors. Say you've got some isolated greys
on a white background with black, blue and red artwork. Lock the white and
draw a filled rectangle set to black over the areas that need to be all black.
It'll leave the white alone, and color any remaining pixels black. Do the same
for the blue and red areas, and you should be down to the four basic colors,
and will have to remove the few remaining strays by had.

Feeling kind of stupid, I took another look at the Adpro operator list…yes,
Remove Isolated Pixels was what I was looking for. I think one of those
isolated pixels was my brain <g>.
I tried it out and it got rid of nearly all the artifacts. The remaining ones,
I cleared out by hand. Next I'll try playing around with the stencil ideas and
see if I can figure out some way to automate it a little more (we're just never
satisfied are we? <g>).

You say you're using ADPro to reduce to 4 colors. ADPro has a remove
isolated pixel function which should do the job for you. If you've got a
few extra bucks, remarkably low price for what it does, I'd suggest
picking up IM/rt. ImageMaster has a whole slew of tools for doing what
you're trying to accomplish.
