#Which Scanner??

I am considering purchasing a flat bed color scanner and was wondering
what the best one for use with the AMIGA would be.
I just received an add from MiGraph for there MS1200 and MS2400 scanners
and was wondering if there scanners are any better than say EPSON or
CANNON flat bed 24bit scanners?

If you are using a Amiga, I would go with MiGraph. They make the software
and modify the hardware to work on the Amiga. I am using a MS2400 on one
of my 3000's now.
Working flawlessly so far with the A3000's SCSI port. Very friendly with
the other devices on the chain.
The MiGraph Color Kit Pro software is getting a upgrade at the moment. If
you order now you will get v1.9. Also a ADPro loader is in the works.
What machine will you be usin it with?

I would be using it with an A4000/040. I have the DKB 4091 SCSI2 board
installed. Do the MiGraph scanners have a passthrough for the SCSI?

Norm,
No they do not have a passthrough. You would have to buy a tee if you
didn't want it as the last external unit. Although it does come with a
terminator. If you need a tee I can get you one. Male to male centronics
cable too..:)

The stock terminator I assume is PASSSIVE? I would have to add ACTIVE
termination since I have a SCSI II type controller.

Norm,
SCSI terminators are all passive. Resistor networks….that's all.

There are several kinds of active termination, including FPT (Forced
Perfect Termination). Other termination schemes are being investigated
for SCSI-III. SCSI-II Fast usually uses something called active
termination, though I'm not sure how active it is (maybe I'll have to take
apart one of those terminators one of these days…)

My dealer told me that their supplier told them that the drive they were
getting me (Quantum Empire 1400) was a SCSI-III.
What can you tell me about SCSI-III (differences from II, data transfer
speed potential, etc.)?

This doesn't sound right. My impression was that SCSI-III was in the very
preliminary stages — not that there would be shipping product in the next
year. Maybe I wasn't paying attention.

Some, but I have even less time than knowledge. 🙂
Really, I knew something about what they were working on. I knew new
termination schemes was an important feature, and I think something about
autosensing configuration was in there too. But little was decided. If
there is an approved standard now, I really don't know what made it.

I know SCSI I uses RESISTOR packs but SCSI II uses something called ACTIVE
termination. I'm not sure what the terminators have in them but they are
not JUST RESISTOR PACKS.

We use SCSI II peripherals at work, the terminators are simple resistor
packs.

Don,
SCSI II can use any of the types of termination. Passive (normal resistor
packs), Active (with a little circuitry in them), and 'force perfect', which is
more or less a terminator that adapts to the bus as it appears at the time. The
latter two have been in use for a couple of years now.

I'm probably way out of school here considering your experience, but
the SCSI 2 terminators I've played with actually use transistors. Most
obvious example was the one that comes with the CBM 4091 – it wasn't
encapsulated so you could easily check out the circuitry. It appears
"they" are actively monitoring/adjusting either impedance or current which
is IMHO a better solution for higher performance on the buss!
I also have used plain old resistor pack type termination with SCSI 2
devices with no problem, but just like under SCSI 1 operations, I'm sure
it's not as effective <grin>.

Passive termination is fine with SCSI-2, but make sure you aren't
configured for SCSI-2 Fast (their is a jumper on the 4091 to turn it off).
You might actually be slower with Fast enabled than without if using
passive termination.
