I have a Targa 16+ and 3DSR#2. I need to write animations in 752X480 Res. This part I can do using the null in drivers.. How do I render at this Res and also see each fram on my VGA monitor or on the targa output… Dave

Dave, I have 3DS R3 so I'm not sure if this is the case in R2 but, change your display res in the set file to 800×600. This will allow you to create images at 800×600 or less and see them as you render. 3DS renders to the default display setting if you have display on instead of null and set the resolution higher than the default. Hope this helps. Craig.

Dave, >> I need to write animations in 752X480 Res.<< I have a targa+ 16/32 and I believe you can do this. Run TMODE.exe and select the next highest resolution ABOVE 752×480 (it might be 752×486), which is a 16-bit colour mode. Override this in the render/config box by typing in 752×480 (0.85 aspect), and chose rdpadi as the output device. You can now render to disk at the correct resolution and aspect ratio (I assume for eventual PAR output), but see a reasonable (but not exact) representation of your frames as they render on your targa+ framebuffer. Martin, No, no, no. A Targa+ *16* cannot do anything above 512×486. Period. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Kevin, >> A Targa+ *16* cannot do anything above 512×486. Period. << OK, I stand corrected. I thought maybe he had a 16/32+ and just missed off the 32 part. I've never heard of anyone owning a 16+ – usually it's the 16/32+ or 64+

Dave, Craig's partially right. If your VGA will display 800×600 in enough colors to suit you, AND you have a driver for it for that resolution (given that you only have 3DS R2, not R3 (which has lots of drivers included), you will get SOME display (probably 256 colors, given most cards). A likely problem, though, is that you are not rendering at an aspect ratio of 1.0, but (sounds like) the aspect and resolution for ultimately displaying on a DPS Personal Animation Recorder. Thus, an image on the VGA will appear distorted (circles will be ovals). However, the resulting file will still be usable as intended – just your preview is a little strange. Unfortunately, the Targa+ 16 only has enough memory for a 512x486x16-bit (32,000 color) image. If you upgrade to a Targa+ 16/32 or 64, you could then display 756x486x16-bit at an aspect ratio close to the PAR (and matching the ATVista) Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Yes I will be using theDPS Personal Animation Recorder. Distorted image on my VGA is ok. I can get the file to the disk at 752 X 480 How can I tell if it's depth is 24?? I pick 24 at render time, but who knows.. Have any of you used the PAR system. I will have my system here in a day or so. What tape deck will work.. Dave

Dave, >> I pick 24 at render time, but who knows.. << If you pick 24 bit then that's what you'll get if you save a .tga – the only other option would be 16-bit and you don't want that. If you are still not convinced, 3dsr3's file info command, most paint packages and file utilities (image alchemy etc) will tell you information about the file. Like bit-depth. >> Have any of you used the PAR system. << PAR systems are as common as muck around here, so don't be shy about asking questions about their usage. I've have one and so do most of my friends. Even the PAR tech support guy monitors the questions about the PAR on this forum. >> I will have my system here in a day or so. What tape deck will work << You're going to love it! (Once you get it installed). Any recording tape deck will do: from lowly consumer VHS to high-end broadcast will work. A friend of mine who knows more about video than I do, thinks a Sony Betacam BVW-35 would be a great acquistion deck for use with the PAR. You can get a used one for around $7k. Good luck and hang around the forum for fun and education 🙂
