#Which HD for PAR?

I'm about ready to get a PAR and want to know if the Micropolis 2217A is still
the best (only?) drive to get. Do any of the new Enhanced IDE drives benefit
or work with the PAR?
The 2217 A is it for now. This is what PAR told me on the phone, But they are
looking for more. I just became a dealer for the PAR.

I personally wouldn't use a Micropolis drive if it was the last drive mfg on
the planet. There are better solutions available !!

The Micropolis is the only drive which works with the PAR at this time.

I always enjoy a good flame! Especially one that is accompanied by such hard
facts.
We test ALL the drives on the market, ALL of them. We have looked at the
reputation of manufacturers and the reliability of the mechanisms themselves,
as well as price/performance etc. It seems that HP, and Compaq would tend to
disagree with you, as would most video server manufacturers and almost every
magazine review done in the last several years on hard disks. Micropolis is
one of the only manufacturers around with a 5 year warranty, and they continue
to set records with the MTBF rating as well as real world results in the field.
They continue to have the best firmware on the market with the highest transfer
rate/spindle speed rating around. There are only a few good manufacturers of
hard drives and Micropolis is one of the best.
May all be so, except for us 6 failures out of 6 drives is a little to much to
tolerate.

You probably should have investigated other components in your system after the
second one failed. In my PC building days, NO brand of hard drive failed more
than twice unless there was something unusual about the system (outdated BIOS,
non-standard controller, flaky chip sets, bad cables, incompatible with OTHER
drives as master/slave, hardware/memory conflicts, etc.)

Thanks for your response. The first failure was in a machine after 6 weeks.
Replaced with a Toshiba and has work flawlessly after 1.5 years. The others
were all in differnet systems. I too have been doing this long enough to
diagnose other problems as well as just replace the HD. 4 of the 6 had been
SCSI and just failed after a short period. The other 2 were IDE and just
failed right out of the box.

I understand your frustration! It's similar to the reason that I try to avoid
Connor HD's.

Sorry you've had such poor experience with Micropolis drives. I've benn
using them for nearly 10 years, and have had one failure on a 3-year old drive
(promptly replaced by Micropolis). You might consider that some other system
problem got you into this mess! My experience of Micropolis drives is that
they are fairly bulletproof, although not always the best performers – but very
reliable.

Sounds pretty bad. Where these hooked to a PAR or to an IDE controller? I
would check the serial numbers to see if they came from a bad batch or the
shipping cartons to see if somone wasn't playing soccer in the street with them
before you got them.
Brick – Thanks for the facts – My Micropolis has been humming along in
concert with my PAR no problem. I've used Micropolis for several years and
never had a failure, I've also seviced several other brands and recommended
replacement w/ Micropolis. System malfunction would be my first assesment with
consistent "6 Failures" on any hardware…

Failures have occured over almost a 2 year period. Since Micropolis came out
with the high RPM drives. None of which in a PAR system. Maybe their drives
are best suited for the PAR system.
