I'm wondering if anyone can give me any hints on using Soft VTR. The company I work for got it so we could lay animation to tape. We're using an AMPEX CVR-40 Betacam VTR and are having problems with frames being dropped. When I used 3DS it with the supplied ADI driver it was dropping 1 for about every 3 or so it laid down. I talked with Moonlight and they suggested using the DOS script utility. This was much better and only dropped a few frames out of the 150 we had to put down. I think that something may be wrong with the time code on the VTR as it seems to never be able to get the right frame number when inserting the dropped ones in. Also, one of the Tech's at Moonlight said that frame dropping was pretty common on Sony BVW-40' and the Ampex I mentioned above. Soft VTR thinks it's a Sony. But – we have an Artstar machine which renders frame by frame to the AMPEX VTR and I've been told that frames never get dropped going that route. One more thing. There's a Sony Digital Betacam deck in the edit suite and I was wondering if anyone knew if Soft VTR will control it. I just got this job and so far it's way cool. Lots of toys. I can finally learn more about video… Any suggestions? Dave Mennenoh

David, >> having problems with frames being dropped. << What is your framebuffer? If it's a targa+ 64, then I may be familiar with the problem. Take a look at the readme.doc that comes with 3dsr3. I've found the utility tplusloa.exe which comes with the diaquest board set (but which may be available from somewhere else). It's just a targa file loader for the targa+ series that Diaquest supplies. Let me know if you have a targa+ – if you don't, I'm not sure what to do.

Martin, it's a Targa+ 16/32. You mentioned a 64 specifically though. Could that still be the problem? It seems unlikely to me. The utility I'm using to pull them up is gettga, which comes with the card, and it only dropped a few in 150 frames. That was from DOS with the SCRIPT util. Within 3DS it was dropping a lot more. But, if you have something I'd be happy to hear it. Dave Mennenoh

David, >> The utility I'm using to pull them up is gettga << just a thought, but you could try the tplusloa.exe utility from Diaquest.

Hi David, I had the same problem with Soft VTR & a Sony 9850 3/4" deck. It turned out to be the deck. It had a tendacy to creep and Soft VTR couldn't line up for acouple frames then it would. I'd check out the deck first and see if thats the problem. Good luck! JC
