That is one gutsy hard hitting raw ad, and I love it!
(Probably not quite your style but its got alot of appeal and the right
attitude IMO. <g>)

Actually, it's not. But it's interesting to see what the marketing types come
up with.

I kinda knew that <g>. I'm glad to see ADESK has a good marketing strategy
promoting 3DS. In this increasinly competitive world it helps us animators when
we say to potential clients we work with 3DS and the marketing people have
developed such a powerful aura for the product. We all known its a great
product; this kind of marketing helps convince potential clients. It all goes
back to overcoming that goofy idea that "the computer does all the work". <g>
But with the proliferation of 3D software that too will soon change. 🙂
Thanks,
John
Is it just me or is that one ugly ad?
____kevin
Kevin, the b&w piece that's running this month is just a "teaser" for the real
4color ad that'll start up in about 30 days.
– G
I got the gist of the add from the copy. I don't know… my best guess is that
the ad was intentionally made ugly to contrast with the next one. Maybe I just
don't get it. It wouldn't be the first time this has happened — believe it or
not.<g>

Well Kevin, you'd probably get a diversity of opinion on that. Personally I
really like it. But then I really like advertising. To me the message is bold
and strong over a subtley placed curtain. The words say it all and the curtain
is suggestive. I suspect there will be a follow up, when R4 is released. I
imagine a really striking full color 3D rendering with maybe just the words
"3DS R4 Released" in a well defined classic font. Like I said, I like
advertising. <g>
John
FYI, you'll be surprised at the actual 4c ad that'll be hitting in a month. I
lobbyed very strongly to offer the Siggraph video (with an additional R4 demo)
and forgo the usual rendered image on the page. The image we came up with to
back the headline is unusual, but it should get peoples attention and should
get them to the phone to dial the 800 number.
We'll see! <g>

Gary,
Sounds like the promotion for R4 is going to be a real
attention getter.
Speaking of tapes, the English fellow from Middlesex, Simon Hedges, who was
really keen on getting a copy of the Siggraph reel, recieved the tape I sent
him and wrote back a really appreciative note thanking me for my effort and
included the postage and the cost of the tape. Thought you'd like to know, he
was very pleased.
Those tapes are much coveted and I'm sure the response to the R4 Release
promotion will be well recieved. I'm glad to see that 3DS
is getting the strong support from management it deserves and equally glad for
your efforts regarding the tape as I think its right on target. Its a great way
to show what 3DS _really_ can do.
Good deal.
John
Thanks again for sending Simon that tape. That was a very nice thing to do.
– G
>> Thanks again for sending Simon that tape. <<
It wasn't a big deal, though it was nice that his
interest was sincere. I just mentioned it because
it supports your contention that people's interest
in the Siggraph tapes will inspire them to call. 🙂

Where's the ad?

Hi, John,
I get the copy's message. Yes, it is full of bravado, but the overall image
leaves me flat<g> and seems to contrast with the connotation of the copy. This
may be intentional. It could be so sublime I'm missing it entirely.
I had something that came out of the copier one time that looked like that add.
(It looks like folded or creased paper to me.) I'm sure this will all make
sense sometime "after September 30, 1994." It'll hit me like a steamroller and
I'll be powerless to stop it.
Kevin,
>> It could be so sublime I'm missing it entirely. <<
Oh I doubt that. Its an "in-your-face come on dude"
kinda ad. "Sublime" is not the watchword.
I suspect that as you're in the publishing business you expect more substance.
<g> (Good thing too as I probably wouldn't like New Riders' books otherwise 🙂
Sending out copies of the Siggraph Reel is without a doubt the best approach.
But not all advertising warrants that kind of effort. In which case segmented
marketing works best. I saw the
ad in "New Media" and in that context it makes sense. If I'd
seen it in Cadalyst, I might have wondered.
BTW when is New Riders latest 3DS book going to be released? 3DS Effects? I
can't remember, its been so long since I ordered it. <g>
Regards,
John
John,
I agree with you 100% about "in-your-face" as far as the words go.

3D Studio Special Effects started shipping on 9/30. You should get it within
the next 2 weeks. I think we had over 9,000 backorders on that one. I know
you'll enjoy it. I had a great time putting that one together.

Could you let me know what magazine you saw the ad in, please? TIA.

John,
I was mistaken, I saw the ad in PC Graphics and Video. I re-read it and I still
think its quite good for that genre. Especially when compared to some of the
others like the recent Micrografx…
"Five Bucks Says You'll Never Use Photoshop Again"
"We Dare You."
I mean come on, how pathetic. <g>
Or Stratas ad "Unleash the Power!" with pictures that look
like there out of the late 80's. And all the images are dark
which makes me suspicious of their shaders. <g>
BTW did you ever find a solution for your aspect ratio dilemma?
Just curious.
John
>> "We Dare You."
Well, at least they didn't double-dog dare you ;^). Thanks for the info.
>>ever find a solution for your aspect ratio dilemma?
??? Sorry, wrong person (I think :^). My only current dilemma is money; too
much cool stuff out there right now and, as alway, not enough money :-(.

That's got to be an all time record for a 3DS book. Very impressive. I'm sure I
will like it. I had so much faith in your efforts from the last one; Inside
3DS, I ordered 3DS Special Effects as soon as it was announced! So did
apparently alot of other people. <g> And isn't it nice to know 3DS'ers are such
a
literate bunch… where we find the time I have no idea. 🙂
Take care,
John
>> That's got to be an all time record for a 3DS book.
Actually, if I remember correctly, Inside 3D Studio had about 12,000
back orders at one point.
>> And isn't it nice to know 3DS'ers are such a

I wish I could find the time to play with 3DS more. 🙁
____kevin
Kevin,
>> I wish I could find the time to play with 3DS more. <<
So do I! I'm usually so busy just getting things done, there's
not nearly enough time just to play. <g>
BTW A friend of mine got his copy of 3DS Special Effects yesterday FED-EX. He's
impressed by the content throughout and thinks all made a great contribution to
advancing the use of 3DS. He mentioned Phil's advanced lofter technique's,
Martin's spline modeling and David's Whale creation, as examples of some of the
topics covered. I know its going to be a nice addition to my collection.
Thanks all,
John
