#MGA & Vibrant drivers
18 messages in this thread
I recently downloaded the file VIB3DS.ZIP from library 3. This release of the
Vibrant Driver is supposed to support the Matrox Ultima graphic cards (MGA2
chip), but the test performed by the driver fails when I select that option
from "3DS VIBCFG".
Could anyone help with this problem? I am running an HP Vectra XU 5/90C with
32Mb RAM and have tried to select the driver with and without Vesa support
loaded. Thanks in advance.
Rafael,

At what resolution and color depth?

All selections fail, but 640x480x16. The message is always "2301: MGA board not
found!". The board is working properly with the Matrox drivers under Windows
3.11.

I'm sorry but I don't have the ability to recreate your environment. I'll
forward this to Nik Grant[ADESK] who has been collecting these threads.

Ok, I look forward for Nik's answer. Thanks.
We just got a Matrox MGA 4Mb PCI board — you can run it at high resolution in
3D Editor, etc. using the RCPADI driver that is included with the board.
Set 3DS to use RCPADI using 3DS VIBCFG, and if you need to change your RCPADI
setup, delete 3DADI.CFG from your 3DS directory.
Better yet, there is supposed to be a new, improved set of Vibrant drivers in
this forum which, hopefully, support Matrox
Donald
My original question was about the _new_ drivers. They fail to recognize the
(my?) MGA board. And I don't know why, but it is taking too long yo get a
significant reply in either this forum or Matrox'. If you are going to test the
new Vibrant drivers and they work, please let me know; if they don't work,
please let the sysop know.
About configuring the RCPADI driver, the manual says: <<The DynaView driver
supports 3D Studio version 2.0. Version 3 supports MGA directly within its
driver list.>> Do you mean this is not true, and I have to install the DynaView
driver?
Thank you very much for the information. Rafa.

It sounds like you might have their new Athena chip. It should have been
correct in the 1.0.4 PRE-RELEASE. Be on the lookout for 1.0.5 to be posted
soon.

The chip in my board says:
Matrox
MGA
Power Graphics
IS-Atlas-R1
9421KK719
Do you know if this is an Athena chip?
Thanks for your interest. Rafa.

Nope. The Atlas is MGA-2. It should work fine. Can you send your 3DS.SET
file and a description of your problems to me via e-mail?

Amigo Rafa, (are you a torero?)
3DSv3 supports the MGA via the inline drivers.
What Ultima model are you using? Are you getting the MGA listed in the inline
drivers configuration screen? If no, download the latest drivers from the
libraries. If yes, is Windows,OS/2, NT, whatever OS you are using working right
with the card -in accelerated mode, not VGA compatible-? If not, do the MGA
setup recognize the board at all? If not, and if you are working with the PCI
model, you maybe should have to enable the PCI slot in which the MGA is
installed on the computer setup screen. Normally, all PCI slots are enabled,
but maybe that's not your case.
If everything seems to be ok and still you can't get 3dsr3 to work with the
MGA… well, I have run out of questions, answers and what ifs <grin>

Yes, the MGA is listed in the inline drivers. I just downloaded the drivers.
Yes, Windows is running ok with the Matrox drivers (@1600x1200x8b)
Yes, the MGA setup recognizes the board, which is the PCI model.
Someone from Vibrant told me perhaps my chip is an Athena model (whatever this
means), to be supported in the next release of the drivers.
Thank you for your interest, Rafa.
PS: No, I am not a torero, but I can see la plaza de toros Monumental de Madrid
from my apartment's window.
The Athena is the latest chips for the MGA series. According to Dave
White, from Matrox (GO MATROX at the CIS prompt -he will tell you if
the Athena is shipping and in what models), the Athena comes after
the Titan and Atlas chips. The Titan has 3D capabilities. The Atlas,
no 3D but faster performance. In the Athena, the 3D strikes back and
you got the fastest performance in the chip family. IMHO, this is
pretty strange. If you have an Ultima board, everything must work. If
the board is OK, the drivers are the latest and your system runs 3DS
in VGA mode… well, it _MUST_ work.
!Vaya! Pense que eras una americana hispanofila, y que te gustaria una nota de
color local 😉
The chip in my MGA says "…IS-Atlas-R1…", so I suppose it is Atlas. Now it
is running OK with the ADI driver, but not at all with the Vibrant drivers.
Perhaps my board is defective; I have posted messages in MATROX & in HPSYS with
no reply so far. Anyway I'll wait for the next release from Vibrant.
Muchas gracias por tu ayuda.
Rafa.

Matrox MGA was fully supported with Version 1.0.3 of the Inline driver.

Were you able to run 3DS with this board prior to installing the new drivers?
John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
I just purchased the whole system, but I can run 3DS selecting VESA modes. Only
I did not bought a Matrox to run 3DS in 1024×768 interlaced! Thanks for your
interest.
