I need as much info about UNIX on the Amiga as possible.
Is UNIX a full OS that I can install on my 3000? (e.g. UNIX on a SUN or IBM
based system)
If so where can I get my hands on it. Or is the problem more complex than
that?

You can get Unix sVr4 for the Amiga from your dealer (they can get it from
CEI). You need an '030, minimum of 4M fast ram (8+ works a lot better), large
harddrive (200M+), and a tape backup system (Unix is distributed on tape).
There are 3 choices for Unix on the Amiga: 1) Commodore's, which hasn't been
updated in awhile and DOES NOT RUN on a 68040 (actually, I was a bit amazed to
see from someone else's message that it was still avail from CEI – it's been
hard to find for eons), 2) Linux, still in an early-mid beta testing stage,
available on the internet (sorry, I don't have a site handy), and 3) NetBSD,
also available on the internet. The latter is currently in version 1.0 Beta
and in a pretty mature testing stage. I've got it on my Amiga 2000 with a GVP
Combo 40 board and a Retina Z2 display board. It requires an accelerator with
a MMU (memory management unit) so a 68030EC based board won't work. It's
working well for me, it's FREE, and the NetBSD project has versions for
architectures from Amiga, Mac, i386, to Suns and HPs (etc). X11 release 5 and
6 are available (not all board drivers for rel 6 yet). X11 drivers for Amiga
built-in graphics chips and for Retina board (works great!).
Available from internet set ftp.uni-regensburg.de and some mirrors. Also on
the Meeting Pearls' CD-ROMs (obviously with a little time delay).
