I just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself. I am the editor of
Video Pro magazine which is dedicated to covering the convergence of
traditional and digital video technologies as they relate to the small,
professional videographer. We do product and system reviews every month, with
great emphasis on DTV and how it interacts with traditional gear.
It's a great idea to start this forum since this technology is now reaching
professional standards at reasonable prices. That's what we're all after!
Also, a question to the sysops: Who started this forum? Are you guys
independent or part of a company?

Video Pro is a relatively new magazine (having been an insert for four issues,
it is now — as of 1/5/95 — a stand alone that you can subscribe to or that
you can find at computer stores, video stores and book stores, like Walden.
Our mandate is to cover any and all technologies that affect video production
in the broadest sense. This means we do actual, honest hardware and software
reviews as well as complete systems (cameras, decks, computers, software,
etc.). We have engineers in house who measure products in the lab and determine
the extent to which the mfrs. numbers are accurate and we have expert users who
evaluate the effectiveness of the products during actual production and post
production operations.
Further, we have articles on running your own business on production
and post production techniques as well as pieces on success stories and very
advanced technologies that a long way from becoming actual products. This is
our "gee whiz" factor that has proven very popular so far.
That sums it up, in brief. Why don't you drop me a note and let me know
what you are up to. We are always happy to hear what everyone is doing out
there and what their wants and needs are — concerning desktop, that is. Have a

Glad to have you here… your insights and experience into producing video
will be a valuable asset to the forum! Steve Ahlstrom is the Forum
Manager and it was his "bright idea" to have a DeskTop Video Forum.

VP…Yeah, this must be it cause I see your name here. Looks great. Am looking
forward to reading the comression article.
Id love to see an article on video compression cards and solutions for the
PPCs. Right now Im trying to decide between a VVS/Premiere with a
4mg-wideSledge or perhaps the NewMedia100 solution I saw at Macworld. Im going
to be using mostly for architectural presentations out to tape, but would also
like to have at least acceptable if fairly decent broadcastable quality. Do
you have any opinions? Do you or anyone you know have either solution?

I just got my copy of your magizine and found it interesting and informative. I
am new to video and it's been a little overwhelming getting started in desktop
editing. Magizines like yours and this forum have been most helpful.

information on technology and techniques that will help the independent
professional whether he is just starting out or is expert in one, but not all,
of the many disciplines that comprise the production and finishing of a piece
of video.

It's called Video Pro and is now available through us here at the magazine (460
W. 34 St. NY, NY 10001) or at major bookstores, electronics and computer
stores. We do product reviews and articles on techniques for camera operations,
editing, lighting and for managing your video business (for example, we have an
article coming up on Leasing).
That's a brief summary, let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

information on FAST/// here as well. Can you give directions???

If I may interject. You will find information about FAST in many of the
categories with discussion tending toward how various FAST products fit into
those categories (e.g. Editors, Videography).
Just as a side note, the FAST DP/R will be reviewed in the April issue of Video
Pro magazine by one of the participants of this forum, Stu Sweetow. Have a look
and let me know what you think.

It sounds like this is a good magazine for people getting into DTV, which is
definitely me! Could you please let me know how I might get my hands on a
copy. I have been looking in local mag. stores but I cannot find anything
speciffically for DTV. I would definitely be interested in a subscription.

The magazine is called Video Pro and covers many topics realted to DTV as well
as traditional video subject matters. It should be available at computer and
high end electronics stores in your area and in the major books stores like
