Bob,
When you access 3ds from home, do you have a hardware lock there or on the
machine at work you are accessing? Can I get around the hardware lock at work
(I only have so many to go around)? Is there another way to access the render
queue from outside of 3DS?
My set-up consists of two 486's and a pentium running 3DS on a Lantastic
network. there is also a 386 on the network that has my modem, word
processing, database etc. Would I need to put one of my hardware locks on the
386 every time I left my office and wanted to access it remotely?

When I check on renderings in progress from home I don't actually go into 3DS
at all, therefore there is no need for an additional hardware lock. I check
out the log files and dat files with DOS commands like EDIT and TYPE. Adding
projects to the que is possible but I haven't done this remotely. To add a
project you would need a hardware lock on the machine doing the add. You can
remove a hardware lock from a machine after a render is in progress and not
have it effect the rendering at all.
From your setup it sounds like you want to have the AWHOST software(part of the
pcANYWHERE package) running on your 386 when you leave the office. From home
you fire up AWREMOTE (the other part of the pcANYWHERE package)and have it dial
the phone number of the 386. The 386 answers and you then can access any drive
your 386 can access as if you were sitting at the 386. We run Novell so I have
to actually login with a password, perhaps Lantastic requires this as well, but
its no big deal just added security.
FWIW, my hardware lock never leaves my main 3DS workstation. I think its been
mentioned but remote access also allows you to copy a .tga to your home pc for
reviewing a frame. GregP and others have described a method for putting a
Video Post entry in your net-render which will call your home via pcANYWHERE
and leave you information about the process (ie. I'm done, I'm on frame 1000, I
just started file #2, etc). This VP process probably requires you to have
AWHOST running at home and the VP calls AWREMOTE via a .bat file.
