Sean, I happened to come in on the end of this thread. If I understand it correctly, you were asking for general pricing on animation. Would you mind sharing what you found out. The only figure I ever heard was $1,000 per second, but I would be interested in knowing what the average is. I would also be interested in know what different people are getting for editing. We charge $45.00 per hour, for S-VHS, which includes an A/B roll suite with an MX-50 and a Toaster. I know once I get the Flyer my prices will go up. Just wonder what the market can handle. Fred

Fred, Happy to recap (and delighted by the overwhelming response to the subject). There appears to be a wide range among the people who posted messages here, from $250 to $750 per second, with simple flying logo pieces at the low end, and "Broadcast Animation" at the high end (which I presume means a lot more bells and whistles, i.e. multi-layered elements, transparencies, effects lighting, etc;) Most seem to have a business that is 1 to 2 years old. I am aware of the $1000 per second figure for medium-sized houses with an established track record, who have produced spots for major cable stations, phone companies, and network talk shows. And I know that to work in that arena you must be prepared to FedEx the work-in-progress many times over, on Beta SP, with the final goods delivered on D2. But back to us, as I did not get the impression that any of us are in that league (yet!),… There were other round ballpark figures, such as Babe Ruth, Fernando Valen— sorry,— such as charging a flat fee for a standard 5 second logo for around $1500. And most everyone talked of jobs that brought in $500 to $2000 as the average that you come across. However, you can liken those jobs to easily caught perch. There are, by all reports, some $10000 to $15000 pike out there, too. There was no bottom line, except to make sure you maintain a level of satisfaction for yourself in this work, as that directly translates to your client, and your attitude can snowball you toward fortune or fiasco. And for the first lucky contestant who correctly answers "How many sports references were made in this stupid letter?" gets a free copy of our first Ad Rats Demo Tape! (We are still in the process of purchasing BETASP decks.) We have a Genesis, Toaster, A/B roll setup. We will not be purchasing a flyer. Sean Howard // Dreaming of everything making sense one day //

I charge $75/hour plus all associated costs, for everything except travel time, for which I charge $50/hour. On the associated costs, like tape, narrator or talent fees, I charge a modest markup…
