#Convert SGI .RGB to .TGA

Does anyone know of a conversion program for the PC that will convert Silicon
Graphics native .RGB files to Targa files. I found one for the Mac but nothing
on PC. Any help would be appreciated.

image alchemy will convert .sgi files to anything you like. There's a shareware
version available called imgalc.zip (go graphff – graphics file finder). The
shareware version is crippled to images of 640×480 or less. Worked well for me
– I bought the commercial version.

Conversion Artist will do it. I use it very often. Its batch processing is
quick and its depth conversions (anything from monochrome to 32 bit) are very
flexible. CA is very good as a basic image processor. As I recall it's less
than $50 – chains like Egghead carry it. The program has been bullet-proof for
me – I highly recommend it.

Next time I'm at Egghead or CompUSA I'll look for it. I've always used HiJaak
but this time it's let me down.

I'm not positive, but I think Elastic Reality has programs that will do this.
I believe my Exabyte/Abekas driver does .rgb conversion – but it's made for
streaming to exabyte, not just file conversion =-(

Thanks for the info. From the responses I've gotten so far – there is Image
Alchemy and Conversion Artist to check out. Sounds like I won't have too much
problem getting my files converted. Most of my work is forensic so I don't
really need D1 quality– so I've got no excuse to buy the Exabyte drivers. Yet.

I see you already got some suggestions for PC conversion software. Is
there some reason you can't use SGI's supplied RGB2TGA utility and convert on
the SGI first?

Well actually I did not know that there was a RGB2TGA utility. I have
converted to tiff on the SGI and then copied it over to a PC, however the
problem is that the tiff file is soooooo much larger than the RGB file. It
won't fit on a floppy, and I haven't networked the SGI to the PCs. Which
brings up the point–what does it cost to do that? I guess I have to get NFS
for the SGI and then use Artisoft TC/IP to network to the PCs (which are
running Lantastic 5.0).
Also, are processor upgrades still outrageously expensive? We have a 50mhz
r4000 Indigo. I know they have cpu's that are a lot faster….but at what
price?

IRIX comes with NFS, so you should already have it. I'm about to set up the
same sort of network, but will just be using TCP/IP and FTP'ing the files
across, since I won't really be sharing other types of resources accross
platforms anytime soon. Lantastic's gateway runs @ $1200 for a 5 user pack, or
$300 per node. As I said, your SGI ought to have all the ingredients already,
mine does.

I'll have to check on the NFS on my Indigo. I remember when I bought it that
they wanted to sell me NFS, but that might have been for the PC. Anyway, thank
you very much for your input. I don't know a lot about networks, but I'm
learning fast.

Instead of Lantastic, why not just get PC-NFS for the PCs to talk NFS to the
SGI? Works great, and, IMHO, is a _much_ better solution than Lantastic?
That's basically what we are running here with no problems.

You're probably right about PC-NFS. However I have 20 PCs here, of which only
6 are used for graphics (i.e. 3DS). The non-graphics people like the windows
interface of Lantastic and probably won't want to change. All I want to do is
occasionally convert some .RGB files and send them to my PC so that I can dump
them to the PAR. The key here is to do this a cheaply as possible. Right now
I can transfer by tape, but I thought it would be a lot nicer to do it over the
network. I'll keep NFS in mind if I can afford it.
Anyway, today I got a letter from SGI saying they've nixed the Indigo
R4000/R4400 series and that future support will be limited. Only two years old
and already an antique!

The original Indigo line has been deleted off the SGI price list, so let
me check on upgrade or trade-in offers. NFS for IRIX lists for $595, and
PC-NFS can be used to talk to it. BTW, in case you're not hanging out in the
ACAD forum, AutoCAD R13 is delayed until November 28, when both DOS and Windows
versions are expected to ship.
