Well I am modem shopping again. I just found out that my USR Sporster V.34 has
a bug (they put the blaim on incomplete documentation from Rockwell). I have
had trouble connecting at 28.8 and even at lower speeds, with some connections
the carrier will drop in the middle of a session. USR has a ROM upgrade to fix
the problem, but they are saying 2-3 weeks. I have read messages from folks
that have already waited 5-6 weeks though. I need to set up my slip connection
and X-Windows emulation asap so I am going to try to find one of the new
Supra's.
Fortunately, the store I bought the Sportster from has a 30 money back
guarantee.

Hmmm, I've been experiencing a lot of dropped calls with my modem lately,
trouble connecting and long lulls where the modem ready light goes out for a
several seconds. I'm not happy with it all and have been looking around at
other mfgrs' products. The modem is a LineLink 144e. Reason I purchased it was
it was cheap at the time $99 and besides handling both FAX/data it also handled
voice and AVM voice mail program was in the libraries here. Now, I want another
fax/modem but it must support voice. Have you priced any of the ZyXEL modems or
know of any other modems that support the voice standards?

You are referring to the USR retraining problem? I was devastated too,
since my upstream node bought one and knocked my Zoom V.FC into the mud,
forcing me to go for a Supra V.34 also.

I am hearing they won't be in the stores for a couple of weeks yet, they
are just shipping the first ones since the first of the year. This whole
V.FC/V.34 episode has turned into a shoddy affair for everyone.

Well, I could not find a Supra, as you have predicted, so I bought a
Practical Peripherals MiniTower II. So far I have only tried it with CIS, but
so far so good.

I've seen the V.34 Supras on store shelves. Just yesterday, in fact, at
MicroCenter, though I could swear I'd seen them before that.
I had heard the V.34 Supra's had already been shipping. Apparently they have
not made it to AZ yet and I couldn't wait. So I bought the PPI. So far I am
happy, except that the PPI has a cheesy souding speaker compared to the
Sportster I had.

I suppose that is possible simply because Supra did apparently ship some
V34's and then halted shipment while they investigated some reports of
compatibility problems. They resumed, I read on their SupraFax echo, the
first week of Jan. For individuals they are still filling backorders but
for major accounts of course it is different. Sounded like most of the
compatibility was USR's not retraining with ANY V34 sets using Rockwell
chipsets, and they (USR) have supposedly corrected that now.
