#Film Help !!!!
6 messages in this thread
So here I am going to film for the first time and have no resources to help me
get through the growing pains. Anyone know of any people, books, references to
help me get going on 3ds to film ??? I have some specific questions regarding
resolution, aspect ratio, playing 26fps on a PAR, 35mm on a Solitaire etc….
Thanx,
Jim
Are you doing this film recording for 35mm movie film?
If that's the case, then you should check with the service bureau that's doing
the film recording, or with your film recorder's manual for optimal resolution.
That said, the company I use has two options: hi and lo res.
High rez academy gate is 2048×1496, full frame cine gate is 2048 is 2048×1536.
There are some schemes for doing lower rez renderings and interpolating
(re-scaling) them to those specs to save rendering time and also to soften the
hard rendered CGI look, especially if you're compositing with live film. I'm
still looking into these schemes, but should have some info soon.
This company will also put lo rez to film: academy is 1024×748, full cine is
1024×768. The pixel aspect ratio is always 1, unless you're going for a
specific effect <g>.
If the sequence if for theatrical release, then you'll probably want to go
Academy. If it's for TV release, then you'll benefit, during telecine
transfer, by confining your image composition to a smaller area on the film in
a 4:3 aspect ratio – again, check with the post house doing the tele-cine
transfer as the equipment varies.
Also, film is actually 24 frames per second, but some shows film at 30fps if
they're going directly to video. Star Trek TNG is an example. And don't
render to fields <g>.

John,
What service bureau aree you working with please?
thanks,
will
Hi John, long time no tawk. The animation company that is using my animation is
asking for 917x688x1.85. I am dumping the .tga frames via DOSTAR to a 4mm
Exobyte DAT. On the other end they are reading my tape via TAR onto an Indigo
and sending the frames off to a Solitaire. (35mm). When the film is printed I
am getting chopped a bit on the top and bottom of the frame as if I had to pull
my camera back a bit. I pulled my safe frame in based on a verbal description
of where I got chopped and am waiting for a print test of 24 frames. This is my
first time and I am hoping there is some reliable method of doing this without
alot of experimentation! Maybe a book or sumpin.
Jimbo…Frustrated on Film…..
P.S. And hey there AutoDesk, maybe a few words about film in your already
excellent docs would be a benefit to those of us who use that medium. Thanx…
That's an interesting resolution/aspect ratio. I wonder what they're doing to
it before it gets on film…
