I seem to have a problem when I go to render in the Keyframer. Whenever I start to render the frames it appears to be processing each frame, however if I toggle between the dialog box and the rendered frame it appears black. I have even let the Keyframer finish the rendering of all the frames and when I go to play the Flic file back it also diplays a black screen. You can hear the hard drive working away though as if it is playing back the animation. Has anyone experienced this problem? I can't seem to find anything in the manual about this. My 3DS VIBCFG file uses the Vibrant drivers for all modes. It will render just fine in the Editor and displays the rendered image beautifully on the screen. It will render a single frame in the Keyframer in full color as well, just not a series of them. Details: 3DSR3 Video Card: Portacom Eclipse Computer: 386DX33 8meg ram Out of depairation I did try it on a friends computer which is a 486DX266 with 16 meg ram, PCI and I experienced the same problem! Any input would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Jim

Jonas Thank you very much for the suggestion, I have have downloaded and installed the new driver as you suggested. I think that the problem stems from using meshes having been created on older versions of 3DS, for some strange reason. If I create a new animation it works just fine. However, when I render an older one it seems to render one or two frames then it turns black. I updated all lights and cameras, but to no avail. I even tried rendering the 'Birdwalk' in Keyframer that comes with 3DS and it does the same thing! JIm

i, << If I create a new animation it works just fine. However, when I render an older one it seems to render one or two frames then it turns black. >> Ah.. if fading to black.. I suggest that you reinstall 3DS from your original floppies. If this fade to blak continues after you've reinstalled 3DS, contact your dealer and they should be able to help you get you a new set of floppies. jonas[adesk]

Jim; This maybe a basic question, but do you have lights in your scene? And are you sure that the normals of you objects are facing the camera? Good luck Zac (AZ-TECH) Berkeley

Zac Thank you for the suggestions, but have have checked everything. I think that the problem stems from using meshes having been created on older versions of 3DS, for some strange reason. The problem that you're seeing is due to a corruption of the 3DS.EXE file, perhaps because of a virus. You should check your system thoroughly for viruses, and then reinstall the program from the original floppies. If it persists after that, contact your dealer for a new set of disks. – G

Yost Group Thank you for your response. I am slightly relieved because I really thought that it was something I was doing wrong. I will check my system, hope it's OK! Jim

Jim >> However, when I render an older one it seems to render one or two frames then it turns black.<< You get me on this one! One thing you can try is just eliminating one thing at a time out of you old project files to see if it is just one offending object. Good luck. Zac (AZ-TECH) Berkeley

Zac Thanks again for your reply. As it turns out I am still having a rendering problem with all meshes. They definitly start to turn black after just a few frames. Even if I add ambiant lighting, set the palette to high, adjust my mapping, drop the rendering screen resolution and adjust and check just about everything else. One odd thing though, if I choose one single frame to render in keyframer it will render it just fine, in fact I can choose any frame and it will be fine. It's just when I render the whole thing that I get a problem. It starts off rendering the first 3 or 4 frames then all my colored objects start to turn black. I loaded a white background and it stayed white throughout the whole 300 frames. I checked everything for viruses and I don't have any. I am going try what the Yost group and Jonas had suggested, thanks again for your time. Jim

I have seen this problem a few times before. It seems to occur when your hardware lock is not connected properly or damaged. Try taking your hardware lock to your dealer and have him/her check it out for you. Hope this helps! Dean Oliver Virtually Real

You need to definitely take your disks back to your dealer and get another set. Your version of 3ds.exe has become corrupted. – G
