#CD-ROM for AMIGA

All, I want to buy a CD-rom set up for my A2000 and am in the dark about whats
available to me. What hardware to buy? Will any scsi based drive work? What
software? Etc. I'm familiar with CD-TV but is it necessary for me to invest
that much to have CD when there seems to be so many others on the market. Any
and all help is appreciated. Charles McCarthy
Any true SCSI drive should work fine. The CD-ROM drivers in AmigaOS3.1 should
work fine and the rest of what you get with 3.1 makes it very worth-while.

I can't find the parrent so I'm not sure what you are asking about that you
want to know whether "it" will work with 2.04.
Dale, Excuse my brevity. What I was referring to was whether or not my A2000
running WB 2.04 will accept any generic CD drive and if there are drivers
available or need I upgrade to 3.1. Thanks,Charlie.

You can buy a CD-ROM driver that will allow 2.04 to use a CD-ROM drive just
fine. You do have to make sure you have a true SCSI CD-ROM drive (or a
non-SCSI controller which matches your drive), not "any generic CD drive."
I'd recomend buying 3.1 rather than buying a CD-ROM driver package. Sure, it
costs twice as much, but you get all the advantages of 3.1, not just a CD-ROM
driver.
Assuming you have a SCSI host adapter in your 2000 and you purchase a SCSI
CD-ROM, you can physically connect it. You will then need to purchase the
software to be able to use it or download a freely distributable CD-ROM
filesystem that can be found in Library 9.

Any SCSI CD-ROM should work with 2.04, but you'll need a CD-ROM driver. 3.1
supports CD-ROMs directly, but earlier versions don't.
I just installed a Toshiba 3501, with AmigaOS 3.1 and it works fine, except I
don't have much to use it for…
There are file systems available here somewhere and on AmiNet that work, and a
couple commercial ones, but I haven't looked into them, yet, since I have 3.1.
They, appearently, have more to offer, but I'd rather stick with the native OS
support if possible.

Charles: I had a TOSHIBA 3301 CD-ROM drive lying around (single speed) so I put
it in my 2000 and sent away for the XETEC software. It was just put the drive
in the 5 1/4 slot and hook it up (power and SCSI) then install the software.

MacWarehouse is advertising a 3X speed drive in their house brand enclosure for
$199.00. The ad describes the drive as a SCSI 3.4X speed Toshiba drive. It
comes in external case, with 50pin to 25pin cable and terminator.
Sounds like a pretty good deal.

Your going to need a CDROM driver since WB2.04 doesn't have one. I've had good
results using ASIMware Innovatioins AsimCDFS file system.
There is a cdrom filesystem in our fourm libraries that I've tried and it works
fine.
That is all you should need to use practically any SCSI CDROM drive.

Long time no see!
Do you want to use the CD-ROM for the Amiga only or also for a PC or other
platform? If so an external SCSI-CD-ROM is an option.
If you want to be prepared for the future, Video-CD etc, you might want to
read the last Byte on quad-speed CD-ROMS. (i love that external Nex 4xi, with
it's parrallel and SCSI port BTW).
