QBTools has never suffered the problems that QB did. QB had crashing
problems at rev 5.4 and 6.0 under 2.04 and 2.1. Revs 5.3 and 6.0.1 worked
fine with the ADos 2.x. However, 6.0.1 did not handle DAT tapes written
in 5.x very well.
QBTools never had any problems with any revs of ADos that I am aware of.
In fact, I crashed my 3.1 system (messing with some coding experiments)
and corrupted my one of the two HDs on it. I used QBTools to recover, no
problem. I've also used it under 3.1 for file undeletes with no problem
either. So I think if you still have your QBTools its OK to use.
In fact, since I had the initial crashing problme, I've used QB a couple
of times on 3.1 from floppy and it seems to work fine that way. I haven't
had the nerve to put it back on the HD yet, but I'd bet some combination
of Asynch and selection of memeory to use for the buffers would provide a
work-around.
To tell the truth, at nearly $100 for the current import, and with IDI
playing it cool and NH gone, I decided the safest path is to gradually
convert over to HDBackup. At least there ar no questions about its
compatibility, and its "free" if you already bought the 3.1 upgrade (even
if it is an ugly dog).

I don't have QBTools. I only bought QB alone…. Now that I paid $94 for
Diavolo, I think I'll "HAVE" to use it <g> … but it is better than QB,
or Ami_back, overall. I still have Ami-Back Tools, and it still sits in my
TOOLS directory.
As for HDBackup, I thought it was wracked with problems and was so hated
by users that it was banished from the HD entirely! That was the reason I
bought QB to begin with — I had so many warnings about HDBackup failing
on restore, I don't think I ever used it (maybe once).

Hmmm, I hadn't heard the HD Backup tales. The one with 3.1 seemed to work
for me when I backed up 3 partitions from two drives and then restored
after re-fromatting the disks. Not an extensive test but…
My dislike for it is the lack of features and information about what is
going on. You are also required to keep the directories elsewhere as they
are not kept as part of the backup itself (QB spoiled me). But, at least
that one day it worked and I did already pay for it…
(Sorry – no way am I paying ~$100 for a backup program when I was paying
$60 for backup plus tools type programs just year ago…)

These tales of HDBackup problems surfaced with OS 2.04. It is possible
that the bugs were worked out in the interim. I know that HDToolBox looks
MUCH diffferent from the version I had with 2.04.
Yeah, $94 is a HIGH price to pay, but then again, I tend to be foolish at
times, and I rarely splurge on my computer…. even 3.1 was a streach to
convince myself to get at $150, but it seems to be much smoother than
2.04. Now that I've fed my computer, I can leave it alone for another
couple of years! <g>

Did you get the 6.0.1 patch and try it from floppy? 6.0 didn't even like
my 2.0 machine… kept locking up just after the corporate brag window
came up.

Well, I thik it was in their lib before it was closed. (I might be
confused with the QBTools 2.0 to 2.0.1, though, as I just checked my last
upgrade disk from NH and it was version 6.0.1 of QB).

BTW, IDI is continuing development and support of Ami-Back. They will
have a section in AmigaVendor shortly … as soon as I decipher and
reconstruct some badly formatted (with missing text) company profile
material they sent me.

Well, their defintion of support and Meriam Websters are diametrically
opposed. When I talked to them (again) lat month about the non-working
TapeWorm they sold to me at WOCA Pasedena in Sept '93, under the
MoonLighter name, they informed me that no further development or bug
fixes for Amiga products would be forthcoming unless the Amiga line is
picked up buy someone and put back in production. That was in response to
a specific question about the much vaunted AmiBack 3.0.
Maybe they are the ones the trustees picked to get the remains of CBM :^}

AmiBack 3.0 is back in development.
And a new product, Pretium, the new checkbook accounting software program for
the Amiga will be available in November. Pretium is a personal accounting
package designed to organize finances quickly and efficiently. Attractive
charts and graphs.
Great. I can see it three months from now – "Pretium for Pentium" …
But I'm glad AmiBack 3.0 is back in the oven. Martin needs some
competition <g>.

Interesting! Wonder what changed their mind from when I talked to them
last month? They had tried to get orders for AB 3.0 updates a long time
ago, but told me last month when I asked, that they had stopped
development pending resolution of the C= affair….

What version of QBTools do you have? I had some checksum errors on my Work
partition after a crash while I was unarcing some files. Previously,
QBTools had no problems fixing this kind of thing. Under 3.1, it didn't do
anything at all after reporting that all problems had been resolved. I
wonder if it has problems with the dfc ffs file system?

O.K. I tried with QBT1.5 not much luck. DiskSalv2 did the job although it
wouldn't fix in place. This WB3.1 has been a series of headaches for me.
My internal quantum has been hit real hard. I had remove the synch xfer
and set the timeout to 2 secs just to get it to boot. No problems before.
A few programs, notably ADPro, are exhibiting some strange performance.
The darn thing starts trying to write to the drive right as it crashes my
machine resulting in a disk validation problem just because I try to quit
the program.

Did you try backing up the system under 2.x, reformatting the HDs intall 3.1
then restore all the applications? I don't think it is the OS. I got 3.1
installed and working fine eventhough I expected major hassles. So far, the
one machine I put it on is no less reliable than the one still running 2.1
