To All, Is anyone else having problems with WBPattern in OS3.1? My problem is that WBPattern won't display workbench backdrop pictures very well. Under OS2.1, NickPrefs did an excellent job of displaying these pictures. On my system ViewTek shows the pictures cearly and sharply. I have the ILBM Datatype in the Datatypes drawer. I have an A3000 with 2meg chip and 4meg fast RAM and a 1950 monitor. Part of the problem seems to be that not all of the colors in the picture are shown. I have screenmode set to 16 colors although I know that Palette under OS3.1 will only show 8 colors. How then can ViewTek, using the same datatype show the picture correctly and WBPattern show the same picture incorrectly? If the datatype is the problem, does anyone know of a better ILBM or IFF datatype? Any help would be appreciated. / / Flying The A3000 on AutoPilot 1.74 \/\/ from Durham,Ontario.

ViewTek will show the pics using whatever palette the pic has. WB pattern will convert it to use WB 8 color palette. -Richard

PD >>screenmode set to 16 colors although I know that Palette under OS3.1 will only show 8 colors. How then can ViewTek, using the same datatype show the picture correctly and WBPattern show the same picture incorrectly? << The answer can be quite simple. ViewTek, displays the IFF pictures on a separate screen. A screen that can have any 16 colors for the screen's (thus the pic's) palette. WBPattern, displays the IFF on the same screen as WB, but the WB screen already has reserved upto 8 colors for its own use. If you open a 16 color WB Screen, this re-stricts WBPattern to an editable palette of only 8 colors plus the 8 colors locked by the WB. If a 16 color picture's palette only shared 1 color with the WB's 8 color palette, then only 9 colors of that picture could be displayed accurately. The WB would either have to ignore the remaining 7 WB colors (rendering the pic's 16 colors into a 9 color pic), or try to use the remaining WB colors and cross matching as close as possible (re-rendering some of the pics colors to match the WB' palette.) If you had an AGA Amiga, or graphics card, I would suggest a 32 color WB Screen to allow the 8 WB colors plus up to 24 free floating colors for the WBPattern's use in displaying pics. Ronald, I understand that WB has reserved colors 0-3 and 12-15 of a possible 16 colors and that colors 4-11 are availiable extra colors for the picture. If the screenmode is set to 8 colors then all 8 are reserved for WB use. It seems to me that the only advantage to the 16 color screenmode is to allow other programs to display 16 colors. Almost all of the Backdrops that I have are 16 colors MagicWB backdrops. This 8 color limitation of the OS3.1 WorkBench is a real disappointment. Maybe someone will think of a way around this limit. Possibly the new MagicWB version demon will help. I haven't got my new update yet. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. / / Flying The A3000 on AutoPilot 1.74 \/\/ from Durham,Ontario.
