#Windows "PLUG-IN's" IPAS
9 messages in this thread
How's this for an IPAS idea:
An .IXP that simply applys Windows-type "PLUG-IN's" – those *.8BF files for
Photoshop, Altimira Composer and the like – to images in Video Post.
Being able to use those would open up a WIDE range of pre-existing effects,
with (hopefully) not alot of virgin coding. Of course, these are not animated
routines, but they are BOUND to be helpful in many circumstances.
Ohh well, just thinkin'….. (LOVE the IK in R4 – it's A-OK)
your in luck , these effects are being ported to ipas as we speak. should be
out by first quarter next year. its a company in santa monica ca thats doing it
can't remember the exact name right now ,but something like hks or the like. i
remember reading a blurb of it in one of the animation mags here.

Far from accurate. HSC is porting its Kai's Power Tools to 3D Studio. That's a
complete rewrite. In other words, the code has been written from scratch in
order to function within 3D Studio. The same kind of work would have to be done
for each new plug in (albeit it would be a heck lot easier to port the second,
third, … nth plug in).
ya i thought it was something like that, i wasn' quite sure. thanks for the
clarification though.

In one word, nuts! That ain't going to happen. In order for it to work, the
entire Windows API would have to be ported to 3D Studio. Those *.8BF files are
just regular Windows programs. The only difference is that, much like 3D Studio
IPAS, they receive a data structure from the host application telling what to
do and where. Other than that they are on their own to do whatever they see
fit. That means they can use any Windows API function. That also means that in
order to have a Photoshop plug in working under 3D Studio, something must be
done so the plug in thinks its running under a _16_ bit Windows environment.
Actually, the PhotoShop plug-in documentation is available, so you could see
exactly which functions they could possibly call. Or you could use one of
those nifty Windows disassemblers to see which calls they make. What, you
don't think it's possible for a really smart programmers to make a Windows .EXE
loader that magically resolves the clearly exported Windows functions with
equivalent stubs under PharLap, and solves the thunks in a similar manner? 🙂
Actually, I'm very curious to talk with anyone who knows more than I do about
the "Windows under DOS" technology you see described in the PharLap TNT kit. At
the very least, it looks like they can emulate DLLs, which is very interesting
if you wonder if 3DS will be ported to Windows, and how all the IPASes will get
ported on that fateful day, too…

Greeting,
If you're in a desperate hurry, you could buy the new Xaos Pennello IPAS or KPT
IPAS. It's great, but do cost more. ($,$$$.CC digit range)
I think that it would be expensive and/or not profitable to market because all
of the royalty/licensing fees you have to pay plus the programming expertise.
They're not cheap. Also the KPT & Pennello already used some similar
features, it's hard to compete (in term of quality, not price). Again, I'm
just guessing.
If this was to be produced & marketed, I simply don't want this IPAS to be like
the Pyros FXs and many others where you have to enter those pesky #s instead of
able to see & preview in REAL TIME (like Xaos Pennello).
Anyway, a great idea!

By the way, are you using r4?
You mentioned that you love the IK. Have you tried to use IK w/ the sliced
objects for SKIN.axp? If yes, does it work well or not?
Hi Spect,

Works great. Check out the diving board in the IK example that I uploaded
today. The flic is in Animations while the unIK'd and IK'd project file is in
Meshes/Projects. Both have the name of flip.zip

Hi,
i caught your thread here and thought that I would Add my 2 cents.
The KPT Gradient designer is in the process of being ported over to
function inside of 3DS as an ipas routine(s) in addition to having all
of the funtionality that it currently has in windows and on the MAC
it will also support multiple layers and animated gradients (This stuff
is wild!!! and very cool for animated textures/bump maps etc in addition
to processing within 3DS Video Post cue entries, it can also be used for
static or animated bacgrounds within the 3D editor / Keyframer. In addition
KPT can be Invoked anywhere from within 3DS. The product will ship in
December, and for the first 60 days the price will be $179.00 after that
it will sell the suggested retail price of $295.00…….
