Is there anyone out there using 3DS running under OS/2? How is it? Any problems? Any Beta sites for the new releases? Anybody multitasking? Anybody have any advanced info on OS/2 support for Intel's multiprocessor spec(Ialways forget the acronym) . I'm just curious and it's a quiet sunday morning in front of the tube. Regards, Steve

Hi Steve, << Is there anyone out there using 3DS running under OS/2? How is it? >> There have been many running OS/2 since R3 was introduced. Download the following file.. I'm using OS2/WIN with 3DS and now that they workd out the bugs (for the most part) I can highly recommend it. I havn't had much success rendering while I'm in Photoshop for instance but at least I don't have to hassle with Phar- Lap limitations (no paging, none!). It's very convenient to jump to any program, windows or dos without closing the one your in first, and I guess that's good enough reasons until they come up with something better. -=Mike=-

Mike, Thanks for the response. I'm just tired of jumping from Windows to DOS all the time and rebooting the machine to change environments. Are you able to model and render at the same time (2 copies of 3ds?) How much memory do you have? Regards, Steve

I have 20 megs and I have run two sessions of 3d-studio but I found i was more of a waste time than it was worth. I've sort of settled with being happy that I can jump out of 3d-studio – do some material editing in photoshop and jump back into 3d-studio to checkout what the material looks like on the object. As far as rendering in the background goes I've only had marginal success at best, but at least it doesn't page!! It's better to except the limitations rather than beat your head against a wall trying to make it do what it claims it can. I hope we can get some other os2 people out of the closet and share some info. That would be great! -=Mike=-

Mike, I downloaded an old thread #55565, filename os2txt.zip that was very useful. it seems to be from about the time the os/2 2.1 was released and there was a lot of traffic on getting it up and running. It seems that most people were successful in getting it to run multiple sessions of 3ds. You might find it helpful to go back and read that stuff. It was in the november '93 time frame. It was encouraging enough to me that I think I'm gonna try to get it up and running as soon as I have the time. Soooo after I finish my current project (about 2 weeks) I'm gonna give it a shot, but first I'm gonna back up the world to tape. Steve

I just bought a tape back-up and I had to buy Backmaster software to back up os2 ($100). I read that same thread which is why I went for it. But let me tell ya, it's hard to find any of those people when you need to figure out how to do it. I spent to much time trying to tweat it out and did get it to work, but to me it's not worth it. Maybe if you have multi-processors which is still new tech. Anyway just a word of warning don't expect to find alot of os2 3d-studio help it's very frustrating to get these guys to share info, and don't start thinking about tweaking it before you get it all working correctly. I wasted alot of time. If you need any help let me know and I'll help when I can. It would be great to get a os2 thread goning again. -=Mike=-

I just got a Sony DAT drive and it came with Novaback software that claims to run under DOS and OS/2. it works fine with my tape under DOS we'll see about OS/2. Steve

Over this last week I,ve installed a Multi Pro video output, a colorado 250 mg tape backup drive, a sony cd, a sound blaster 16 cd, and everythings working in dos or os2 and hooked up to vhs. So I'm having some fun tonight outputting my animation to VHS with sound. Oh YEAH, and I got a wacom tablet with pressure pen and puck. Everythings coming togeather real nice. -=Mike=-

WOW, I hope I have that kind of p-o-s-i-t-i-v-e experience when I try OS/2. You're convincing me that it won't be that bad. Can hardly wait. Steve

I've only been using a puter for a year and it's been a steep learning curve and os2 did'nt help that at all. But, sence they have worked out the bugs I like it alot. When they sent me the service pack (patched up their previous screw ups) and it was twenty disks … , that's alot of screw ups! But since then it's been cool and I can recommend it, in fact I can't work without it, but their's alot of room for improvement in all the the platforms. I personally would love to get onto a SGI platform. -=Mike=-

>> I hope we can get some other os2 people out of the closet and share some info. << I have been using 3DS under OS/2 — WITH a PAR!! I frequently render in the background. I load up the network queue, run 3DS in slave mode, switch to the Desktop and go about my other work. Meanwhile, the frames of my animation pop-up one at a time on my video monitor as they are sent to the PAR. I LOVE IT!! It's nice to see others catching the wave! — James — MAP —

Man that sounds great!! I just bought a Micro Pro CTV ( poor man's PAR) but it's pretty good, I was surprized. I remember getting a slave session going along while back but I didn't feel it was working quite right and ended up shining it on. I'm going to get back into it right away. Thanks for the info, your the first person I've talked with that is using os2 / 3ds. Is there anyway I could get a copy of your config.sys? Is there any special settings? Now that I think of it I've upgraded my system alot since I last tried. Hmmmm. -=Mike=-
#130820From: James Coulter[Mindscape]Oct 23, 1994 11:51 PM
>> any special settings? << For my slave sessions, I have a special 3DS-VGA.SET file which is configured for plain vanilla VGA. OS/2 is much happier running DOS apps in the background that use simple video modes. I doubt there is anything of use in my config.sys for OS/2 since it is just an ordinary config.sys. I have made no special modifications for running 3DS. Oh, some programs like PAR.EXE require the use of a more normal DOS, like DOS 5.0. So for those programs, I boot from a DOS image. It works great. — James — MAP —

Thanks for the info, I'll try that again this week. By the way what's the "MAP" stand for (that's my initiatials). -=Mike=- the MAP.

>> what's the "MAP" stand for (that's my initiatials) << Hey, that is a fun set of initials! MAP: Mindscape Animation Productions. However, I am currently undergoing a company name change. I am still contemplating a good name starting with "M" so I can keep the acronym. — James E. Coulter — M________ Animation Productions —

>>Hey, that is a fun set of initials!<< I'll never tell, people keep breaking out into hesteric's when I tell them my middle name! ….and I TELL them Avery is not that funny! -=Mike=-

I guess laughing a middle names is an American tradition. And hey, Avery is not so bad! — James — MAP —

Mike, I'm all theory here because I.m not running yet but…… I've had to upgrade my hard disk controller for OS/2. A while back I bought a 1 GIG IDE (very non-standard for DOS but very cheap at $499) but it came with a special driver called disk manager that works fine with DOS, Windows , and 3DS however it doesn't work with OS/2. I've had to order an Extended IDE controller ($69) for OS/2 and then I should be "standard " and maybe running. Regarding your other comment, I think that the "FULL OS/2" is really OS/2 for Windows packaged with Windows and DOS in case you don't have them yet. Or were you referring to "Workplace"? Keep me informed of your progress, Steve

>> [you are] the first person I've talked with that is using os2 / 3ds. << Try Doug Azzarito [72360,3555]. He was hanging out here a while back and was very enthusiastic. Also, try Jim Giliberti [73352,451], IBM mgr. of OS/2 graphic development. He, too, <natcherly!> was enthusiastic! I, on the other hand, have untried copies of 1.3 and 2.0 on my shelf. I still suffer post traumatic stress from my installation of Win 3.1, and will probably wait until I can buy OS/2 preloaded and running 3DS as an applet–unless you can convince me differently! <G> And what kind of name is "WARP," anyway?! My dictionary defines it as (1) to bend or become bent out of shape (like me, after tryna install it?!), (2) to turn away from what is right or good, and (3) a mental twist or quirk!
#130973From: mike philbrickOct 24, 1994 4:18 PM
I'm not trying to convince ya, it's a pain, but alot less of a pain than it was now that they really fixed it to a great extent. Actually Iwish some third party would come along with a platform that would use the puters full potential but I don't hold much hope for that atleast not chicago. Anyway gotta go to 3d-studio class at ucla, til then. -=Mike=-

He, too, > <natcherly!> was enthusiastic! > Thanks for the name drop….! BTW, a couple of things have changed. I am no longer with IBM as of October. I am now managing Compaq's System Software Development for the Portable Division. I am now using another CIS ID (see above). BUT some things have not changed…. I am still enthusiastic about OS/2 and 3DS! JimmyG
