I work completely in the "windoze" environment and would love to see a release of 3dstudio 4 windows. The common excuse by A-desk has been that nobody has enough RAM to run such a massive program w/ a windows base. Balogna!! How much do they really think it will take !! The next best thing would be to run it in a dos shell window. If anyone that is sympathetic toward my idea, knows how to do this, (pharlap setting?) I would really appreciate it. Thanks alot. Hi Daniel, << The common excuse by A-desk has been that nobody has enough RAM to run such a massive.. >> FWIW. You didn't hear it here..We've got individuals in this forum who have 64+Megs of RAM to improve their rendering productivity. jonas[adesk]

64 ++ RAM… (sorry, too new to know quotes yet) Yea, we got one comp w/ 80 megs on it. It'll never get used by the dopes who work on it though. Greg.

<<The next best thing would be to run it in a dos shell window. >> This has been capable for some time. Detailed instructions to set up 3DS running in a DOS shell under Windows are in the installation guide and the README file. -Brian

>>nobody has enough RAM to run such a massive program w/ a windows base. Balogna!!<< I'm not a programmer of Windows or any expert in software engineering, but I do know how inefficient they're in term of their memory addresseses, DLLs, ect.. Have you ever run Photoshop 3.0 w/ 128 Mb of RAM and still it's slow like a turtle. Yes, even with the RAMs, Windows just don't have the codes to push it. (by the way, Photoshop 3.0 also have the Windows NT version) I love Windows NT, not Windows! Hopefully 3DSr5 will have such support. Petition in to the ADesk & Yost Group. Get your collegues, friends, ect.. to make them aware of how demanding it is. Join the "3DSr5 for Windows NT" crusade. I'm thinking of one as of this time of writting. You also mentioned that you would like to run 3DS under Windows's dosshell. It works, but it's still 3DS's interface, not Windows. It's pretty inefficient, I wouldn't use it unless it's really necessary. Refer to you installation guide. I think ADesk and/or Yost Group is doing the right thing not to put in Windows. Another thing related to this is the release of Caligary True Space 1.0 for Windows. It's an average 3-d program (my POV) Try to work on a medium to large scale project and I bet that you'll be suffering for months (waiting for disk swapping). Again with 128 Mb + in my PC, it's still swapping like hell. I have more evidences of poor performance on Premier, Painter 3.0, ect.. I don't want to be a pathetic guy, so I won't further talk about it. With 3DSr3 & DOS Pharlap extender, the program handle bigger projects quite well. I think that the Pharlap extender is specialized for 3DS, so it's more "optimized" as compared to Windows. I don't have any significant slow down anymore as used to Windows. Blame Windows. Daniel I run a commercial art studio and have worked in windows for the past 6 years, and have gotten 3d studio to run under windows shelled out to the dos prompt. If you have ever gotten upset with applic. errors running software designed for windows, you aint seen nothin yet, if you want to run 3d studio in that environment. From the age old problem of memory conflics, to accelator board conflics, to a whole raft of error messages that even a software engineer would'nt understand. If I were you I would design and illustrate in windows and handle your animations in dos. It just is'nt worth it. Alan Albrecht
