Hello and Merry Christmas,
I've got a general question that I wanted to ask. I image processed
a photo of a plane that was parked in front of a garage, cockpit
open, no pilot, wheels down of course. I made a beautiful picture
with the plane in the air, cockpit closed, pilot, wheels up, prop
spinning, in front of a great sky backdrop.
I did this for a wife who wanted a picture of the plane as a gift
for her husband (it's his plane of course). How do I go about finding
a service locally to produce an 8×10 or better yet, a poster of this
file.
Will a service make just a single picture and roughly what would
the cost be. I already have the file in IBM JPG format and even
though I realize that the resolution is low (736×482) for printing
purposes, the 24 bit colors make the shading look so good that I
think it will still look good on paper.

Thanks for the feedback, Jim. Have you ever had a poster made from a 24
bit file with a standard video overscan resolution. If you have, how did
it look? B. Patek
I have never had a need to go from a video picture to a printed one.
However I have seen some created from Amiga slides by a Polorid device,
they looked great in 8.5 x 11 inch.

Ya might try chatting with John Bennett here in Amigaarts or
amigavend. Digital Imaging is his Gig so he should be able to come
up with a solution for you.

Its kinda dificult to get anything larger than a decent 8×10 print
from a video res framestore, but beauty is in the eye of the
beholder.
I've been lurking this thread for a while, and I would be happy to be
of some help to Bruce if I can.
We can print upto 30×40 IRIS prints if its worth while from a quality
standpoint. Wouldn't recommend it from video res images. It takes
atleast a 5kx7k image to get 30x. We can also do transperencies for
conventional photo printing.

John, thanks for jumping into this thread. If I came up with a decent
slide of my image, would you be able to come up with an 8×10 or poster,
and what would the cost be roughly?
The only way I could come up with a 5k file would be to let Adpro
rescale the image, but even though it has great image processing
capabilities, it can't create something out of nothing, so I would
expect a whole lot of dithering/smoothing going on. I will probably
try it anyway just out of curiosity.
One last question; In the future, if I had some Lyuponov images or
other images that I thought would be marketable as posters, what would
I expect to pay to have large quantities of posters made. Probably
what I should be doing is finding a Chicago phonebook and make some
calls to see where it gets me.
One way or another (I'm waiting for the VP from Centaur) I want to
start making some money with my Amiga (before I burn out at my current
job – medical electronic field service). I'm in the video world at
home at the moment. I made 7 videos for a doctor friend (no money
involved – I did it for the experience – He was doing the seminars
for free).
So one angle I have is to reprocess boring 2 hour videos into a 30
minute piece of entertainment. The other angle is that my son and my
friend Eddie Williams are excellent artists – maybe I could get that
artwork onto posters.
Anyhow, thanks for getting back to me, and I wouldn't mind getting
more information about what your company does or what you do for

I work for an Imaging service beareau in Hollywood CA., We cater mostly to
Ad agencies that specialize in movie print promotions ( Movie posters :^).
We are an Art shop that creates the original art work, then it gets sent
to other Pre-press shops that actually do the large runs of posters etc.
We do the scans, photo manipulation/retouching, and supply output from
either upto 8×10 trans or upto 30×40 IRIS prints for comps or small run
posters. This business originated from a very sucessful conventional photo
lab and retouching/airbrushing studio. We can do it all when it comes to
imaging, down and dirty if need be.
I don't like to talk price here, frankly its kinda embarssing what we
charge our customers. And its not cheap. It pays my bills though :^)
There are much less expensive sources, probably local to you.
I'm always happy to supply what ever know-how I have in this field to my
Amiga buddies here. Its my pay back for all the help I've recieved.
Perhaps you can e-mail me a %100 JPEG of the image and I can send you some
'samples'. Let me know if you want to use regular mail and I'll give you
an address.
Working from video res images is kinda tough for print applications, I'd
recommend rendering images as large as possible. Manipulating large files
on the Amiga can be difficult if not aquard, but not impossible. You need
lots of Ram and horsepower, like the Macs or PCs.
We can probably go to maybe 16×20 or so from a 750×480 res image. With
alittle help from PhotoShop. Bigger res the better for print apps.

And of coarse looking at it from a 'Proper viewing distance' for a 16×20

Hi, John
I thought I would let you know what my latest idea is on getting large
prints from video res images. I finally got the right 16M video driver for
my 486 DX2. What I plan to do is port the images over to the IBM as JPG,
and then take 35 mm prints or slides off the monitor. I should be able to
get what I need from the negatives.
I actually had a lot of success taking pictures off the Amiga monitor
using a telephoto lens 10 feet away with the F-stop wide open. But, of
course, I could never get rid of the scan lines. With the IBM I see no
scan lines (high scan rate) and no pixels (16M color shading), so I'm
expecting to get WYSIWYG onto color prints. I'll let you know how it turns

So far things have been kinda low key for me, Thats the way I wanted it so
things have been fine.
For New Years I'll be going to San Francisco for a little Family reunion
and partying, that will be the highlight of the season for me :^).

I wish I lived a bit closer to San Francisco. Was reading about a
event this summer that sounds FUN! Called Robot Wars were R/C
Cars/Robots from 2 pounds to 150 pounds try to DESTROY each other. I
just sent for more info on the event and looked into getting the
Video of Last years event. robotwars@aol.com is the email address if
memory serves.
Some friends of mine in Madison built an entry for this year's Robot Wars…
