Bug Report: Screen coruption on Mach64 with 128MB of RAM
3D Studio Release 4 C1
Vibrant Driver Version 1.0.5.P1
Computer:
Gateway P5 120
QEMM V7.5
Memory 128 MB
Video:
ATI Mach 64 2MB
PCI Bus
BIOS 1.46T – 8A
Problem:
With 128 MB of RAM the screen corrupts at all resolutions other than 640×480
x16 colours. This occurs on all machines with 128Mb of RAM. The problem does
not occur with 96MB of RAM. After several emails with ATI Technical Support the
problem has been identified as follows:
The Vibrant drivers for VLB and PCI mach64 cards relocate the MEMORY APERTURE
at 124 MB for both 2MB and 4MB cards. This causes a problem when you have 128MB
of RAM.
The only work around is to use a combination of Panacea and Vibrant VESA
drivers but this is not ideal.
Matthew,
Why are you running QEMM? The Phar-Lap extender does a really good job. I don't
use any mem manager on my machines and I get all the mem to use for 3DS. I have
the ATI card too and have never had a prob, even with the Vibrant Mach 64
drivers.
You might try going into the Phar-Lap mem software and allocating dedicated mem
space for the ATI. I don't know how to do it but I'm pretty sure it can be
done.
Bye!
Mark:
PMJI, but for one thing, _I_ use other software than just Phar Lap-based stuff,
and second, the Yost Group reported measured performance increases when using a
memory manager (like QEMM) over using no manager whatsoever. They didn't have
an explanation for it, but there it was, so….
Dave
David,
I use other stuff too. I just made a separate boot disk for 3DS.
Strange, I hadn't heard about the performance increase.
Mark:
FWIW, when I tried to use my 72MB of RAM without a memory manager DOS/3DS only
recognized the first 64MB. I would swap to disk with 64MB RAM used. With QEMM
I don't swap until I use all 72MB. How much RAM do you have? When do you
start swapping without using a memory manager?

Bob,
I'm can't help you. I have only 32 or 64 megs in my machines. 3DS sees all of
that with no manager except the Phar-lap.
