Scan Converters compared

I am looking for an external VGA/video converter/encoder box to enable
recording of sequences of still images, plus a few animations. As far as I
can find out, nobody offers a product that will handle more than 800×600 res.
And I have found through trials that boxes relying on software drivers often
have problems (interacting with graphic card drivers).
So I have narrowed the field to two products:
AVerKey 3, from AVerMedia Technologies
MultiPro CTV from AITech.
Does anyone out there have any comments (good or bad) on using either or both
of these products? (I guess that experience converting to NTSC would apply to
PAL)
Any advice much appreciated –

Check the magazines for the name PC/Video for their scan converter
advertisements. They have a model which will display any resolution you can
put up on the screen, sells for about $2700. You can rent it for 14 days for
about $400 (which we did). They were extremely helpful is setting it up and
the unit seems to be well-made.
It can be configured to handle PCs as well as SGI Indigos (our use). You must
remember that NTSC video is still only 720 X 480, so I think when you record
anything you will find the image clipped.

I had an Aitech? convertor. It worked great, no flicker, clean crisp clear
images, and the day before I downloaded my first project, two days before the
deadline, blammo, it looked like Mexican TV in Russia! I bought a Grand Vision
Pro, It works pretty good ~$350. Hyperconvertor will convert at high
resolutions that you are looking for. For the price of a Hyper you can buy a
PAR. I'm saving my pennies ( got a pretty big stack ) for a PAR myself.

Yeah, we rented the Hyper Converter for $400 and had it for two weeks. I felt
the PVR would be a better direction for us so we sent it back. We're ordering
the PVR/AD2500 as soon as we find a builder who guarantees no problems with
fitting the sandwiched boards and not hitting the CPU.

I would start saving pennies too — but as far as I can see from the PAR specs,
there's no way to record sound onto tape simultaneously with the animation. Or
ist there???

THanks for the suggestion. I agree that renting before buying is the way to
go. Saves a lot of hassle.
