#COMPAQ incompatibility
6 messages in this thread
We have recently purchased a COMPAQ DeskPRO XL 590 computer which uses a Q
Vision 2000 graphics board, but 3D Studio R4 doesn`t seem to run on it. I have
been told that I need to purchase a program called Liquid Sky in order to
properly run 3DS, but I can`t imagine that that is the only solution. I would
greatly appreciate if anyone could tell me about another way to solve my
problem, or of any freeware/shareware utilities that I may be able to use.
Thanks in advance.

What specific problems do you have? How did you configure your video drivers?
I've run R4 on an XL with Qvision 2000 with no problems. Give me some details
and I'll help you get it worked out.

Thanks for the quick response. I am having trouble configuring the monitor.
When I run the 3ds vibcfg program to configure the Vibrant driver, the
selection of Q Vision 2000 does appear, but if I choose any mode other than
16color, VGA, I get an error that there is no MGA board in place when the
screen is tested. I even downloaded the file VIB3DS.ZIP, but I
get an error that the program does not support DOS/V, which we are using. If
it makes any difference, I am in Japan using the Japanese language version, but
I don`t think that should matter. I would greatly appreciate any more advice
that you could give me. Thanks again for your help.

I just verified the default as shipped drivers for Qvision 2000 ( or the MGA
selection ) does not work. But the drivers in Vib3ds.zip do work fine. Where do
you get the error 'does not support dos/v"?? When you are unzipping the .zip
file? or after you've copied the drivers over?
Your best solution is to get the .zip file unzipped and copy the new drivers
over your existing vibrant drivers if that will work. An alternate work around
is to load mgavesa.com which should be on your machine already but if it's not
it can be downloaded from the Matrox forum here on Compuserve. After you have
Mgavesa.com loaded you can pick the standard VESA setting with vibcfg. The Vesa
driver from the original version works fine but a little slower than the direct
Mga or Qvision 2000 settings.
Let me know if you need any further help.

Hi Darin,
Have you retrieved the updated video drivers library, VIB3DS.ZIP, out of the
3D Studio library section (sec 3). It has support for the Q Vision 2000? Are
you having trouble getting it to work?

Grant, Thanks, I just downloaded VIB3DS.ZIP. I have installed it, but when I
try to run it, I get an error that it cannot operate with DOS/V, which I am
using. Does this sound right? What type of system am I supposed to be using? I
can`t find any solutions, so I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks
again.
